I made a leather doohickey so I can finally carry my large slipjoints!

I have been fond of large slip joints for years but I find I rarely carry them in jeans and never in slacks or khakis. The huge pockets in dress pants allow even the longest slipjoints to fall sideways which looks bad and feels even worse. Not only this, but with the straight pockets on slacks I find smooth knives without a pocket clip are always falling out. I can manage a 2.5" long knife, but nothing longer without constantly having to adjust it. I thought about it for a day or two and took my box of leather tools out of the garage two nights ago. I can make a working sheath for just about anything, but I can't come close to the artistry of so many on here and so I rarely show pictures of anything I make. It's not at all pretty or finished looking, but the idea is it stays in your pocket and just keeps that knife for either falling sideways or slipping out a. This was supposed to be a prototype that I'd use for a few days and either modify or make an improved version. It has worked perfectly and allows me to carry even my full-size slippies without budging from a secure upright position.

very nice idea & design. I dont carry traditionals because I hate the way they lay in your pocket. Kudos on coming up with a unique solution:-)

I made it a bit tight, but I think it'll loosen up over time. My hope is I will be able to withdraw the knife from the doohickey and the doohickey stays in the pocket. This can be done with a bit of assistance of a thumb placed on the leather. The doohickey stays in place and is quite easy to load the knife back into without ever having to take it out of the pocket.

Interesting idea! I like it, simple and keeps it upright and off to the side. Great!

It never really bothered me to have the folder down in the bottom of my pocket, but then again thats why I always go for SLIM traditionals (single blades almost always, or 2-blades at most).

I like it, what a great idea. You'll have to patient it and name it the doohickey. I can see it now...the Doohickey 1, Doohickey 2 etc....

lemme guess: before that nifty invention of yours, you used to make them from paper and cardboard, right? :D But seriously, it's a great idea and I might adopt it. I've been shopping around for a leather belt pouch for my 4 1/2 (closed) GEC #23 and the sheaths for sale online cost as much as a low-priced spyderco. Maybe I'll have mine made from kydex.

No, before this I just didn't carry the large slipjoints...

That doohickey is a pretty dang good idea, I like it. I have been avoiding carrying slipjoints specifically due to the whole falling out of pockets of my khaki pants problem, and I am now just giving it another shot.

Nice idea. I'd like to pass along that if you can get away with wearing a more khaki type of pants at work, the George brand at Walmart has a seperate pocket in the right side. They come in tan khaki color, black, and blue. I was wearing Dockers and these from Walmart actually last longer and look about as good and are much cheaper. But anyway, within the right front pocket, there is a smaller pocket(I guess a coin pocket) to the side and I have even carried a Buck 110 in there with ease. and your keys can fit in the regular pocket seperate from your knife and down lower.

That is a great idea. It's like a pocket slip but less cumbersome in the pocket! I tend to buy traditionals that will fit my watch pocket for the same reasons as mentioned above. If it cannot fit in my watch pocket, I like my traditionals to have a lanyard hole so I can hang it from a key chain fob in a vertical position in my front right pocket. Your doo-hicky looks like a good alternative to both a pocket slip and a key chain fob. Thanks for sharing, and the work looks just fine to me
