I made a mistake........

Reading your thread made me sad Jeff, but thank you for putting this subject out there. Perhaps the good that can come of this is if you see a thread where someone is asking," should I send in my knife that was XXX's for repair, you could share your experience with them and possibly steer another away from a similar disappointment. I hope you eventually find a more pleasing resolution to this particular knife...

Thank you, the main reason I posted this is the hope that someone might learn from my mistake.

Have a great day,
Jeff

Well, you did good in respect to posting a warning. Nothing will mitigate the pain, not second guessing yourself, not blaming yourself or CASE, nothing.

It is a difficult call on a knife like that. If it is an old keepsake but you want to use it as it was intended, as a tool, then it seems that it would be nice to have that keepsake with you in your pocket and get it back to form as a useful tool.

The predicament would come (for me) as to whether I would want to pull it out and use the whole knife (not just the blades that function correctly) as an EDC in rotation and think of its heritage when using it, or to toss it in the box of other very well used and inoperable knives I have and think about its keepsake value only when I run across it.

Tough call. Sadly, the banged up knives I have inherited now sit in a box. I haven't had the guts to mail them off to anyone, much less a busy factory. They remain in need of repair, seldom seen and never used.

Sorry for your bad luck.

Robert

Wouldn't the Pen blade from the CASE Texas Jack be suitable? CASE certainly have those new in cv! Them installing a stainless blade is pretty clumsy in my view.

I agree Willgoy, clumsy. The pen on a Case Texas Jack is probably longer (3 5/8" frame) and a bit thicker shape than a pen from the 087PE (3 3/8" frame). Sounds like that might be close to what happened.

That being said, I can't imagine there is not a pen blade somewhere in the Case plant in CV that would have been the correct blade.

I have quite a few Case knives, most in cv steel, i am willing to donate ANY one of these knives if someone more skilled than me is willing to dismantle it for a donor blade? Jeff, are you able to post a picture of the knife with close ups of the blade joint? Surely we have a craftsman here that can do the blade swap for Jeff, none of my Cases have sentimental value, i will give up and one necessary if someone else can make the change?

That's a real bummer of a story. I hope you contact Case and express your heartfelt disappointment and see if they can come up with a solution to make it right. Posting this is a good cautionary tale to those of us who have sentimental knives that may need some fixing or repair, tread lightly is the moral of the story I suppose. I hope you find a solution that puts you at ease. Trevor~

That's a kind offer Jim. It's too bad you got bum luck with a knife that had so much sentimental value. I know I would be emailing them to talk to the right person, and at least get some paperwork started. But then again, if Jim can find you a craftsman, you might be in better hands all together.

Good luck with this.

WOW, I don't even know what to say! Thank you very much for the offer. I am still trying to figure out the picture thing but hopefully before long I will get a picture posted. The kindness and generosity of this forum just blows me away.

Have a great day,
Jeff

Jeff,
I know a gentlemen that worked at CASE for over 30 years and retired from there. He can do anything with a knife and he has CASE blades, springs etc. I can contact
him for you and see what he's got, He has many different types and years of CASE blades. I'll have him check on a pen from that era and go from there. I might just be able to take care of it for you
my friend. I have a few of my Pop's knives (grandfather) I'd be extremely upset if that happened to me and one of his knives. Let me know and I'll get the ball rolling buddy. Don't worry it can be taken
care of buddy...

WOW! Jason that is very kind of you. If you get a chance to talk to him that would be great. Let me know what he thinks and what it would cost, do to circumstances beyond my control I cannot afford to spend much on this or anything else at this time. Thanks again for any information that you can find out. This truly is the best place on the net.

Have a great day,
Jeff
