(updated, now with in use pics and sheath pics)
well i have actually made a 2 or three knives before this, but they werent so good. so this is the first knife that i think actually deserves recognition.
it is sawblade steel, about 1mm thick (yea, its pretty thin). it is 7'' overall, with about a 2.5'' blade (3'' cutting edge). the handle is oak, from some extra peices of wood flooring. the blade is convex ground, and it sports a natural patina left from its days as a cross-cut saw. for putting the edge on it, i didnt use a belt grinder or anything, as i dont have one yet, but if i make another, i will use a grinder. i would have liked to have made a longer blade, but with such thin steal, i have to keep the blade legth about 3.5'' ore below, else it will be far too flexible. the handle is held on with JB weld, since i dont really have the equiptment to deal with pins currently.
unfortunatly i havent had time to make a sheath yet, but i will get to that next weekend (ill post pics). i also didnt really get to test it outside today, as it got dark pretty fast. i did snap a few photos though (the dusk-time lighting didnt really make for great photos though):
in the last few pictures, it has liseed oil on it, so it should have soaked in by tomorrow morning. before starting, i figured that the handle would be an obvious shortcoming, but it looks to me like it turned out pretty well, plus, it is surprisingly comfortable to hold. towards the blade, i sanded in a spot for a thumb for use during chest-lever cuts.
i was thinking of doing a passaround with a knife i plan on making iddenticle to this, so, would there be any interest, and mods, would it be okay? i would do the passaround with this one, but if somthing were to go wrong, id rather it not happen to my first real knife.
