a little update:
I have been using my F1 for small campcraft and edc on a scouting camp i was visiting over the weekend; feathersticks, cutting rope, light wood splitting, pointless carving/whittling etc.
I love it! The knife is so light and it handles very well. The scales are a bit on the small size but it fits my hand well.
In the weekend i also used my BHK Woodcrafter. The F1 feels more nimble while still performing solidly in all tasks, even batoning smaller sized rounds was easy. The woodcrafter is very solid knife and it's a tank but it feels much heavier on the belt and lacked much agility.
Although I rarely baton with my knives as i usually have a hatchet and folding saw nearby when hiking is not my main goal, it feels good to have this as a solid performer. It is still light enough for me to take it hiking in the backcountry.
The only downside i can think of is the blade length and the sheath. The length is not really a downside on it's own but I'm used to the ESEE-4. When out hiking for several days or with a hatchet around a 10 cm blade is plenty long but i won't mind a few centimeters extra like my beloved ESEE-4. As for the sheath, i have the zytel and the aftermarket leather dangler: The zytel works very well for edc but it seems like the wiggle inside is enough to dull the edge a bit, the dangler is great for camp use but a bit too low and i prefer a more utilitarian plastic-ish one. I already contacted Martin Swinkels for a kydex with higher dangler, so that should be covered
At home i took out the ESEE-4 and even though the blade is 1.63 cm longer i was still surprised how much heavier it was. All this makes me contemplate the S1 as a woods/camp knife: Roughly the same construction but longer than the F1 and still a good deal lighter than the ESEE-4. For now, the F1 and ESEE-4 will have to share the love.
