A handle like you've shown in your photographs will be perfectly strong when forcing the edge through something. You'll haven no issues there. It will be much less strong under lateral bending and twisting forces. So if you intend to use the knife like a knife, then it should hold up just fine. If you intend to use the knife like a pry bar then you may have issues. If you decide to not finish it, I recommend heat treating it and then experimenting with it, seeing how much abuse you can put it through before it fails. That will teach you a lot.
