First off I'll say that I am not a collector.. I have a cold steel recon scout for camping, a Kabar D2 extreme in my nightstand for (well let's hope I never use that one), and alternate between an SOG flash one and a small Sebenza for EDC. (oh yeah - and a Becker necker with micarta scales and an ankle rig - TDI or something like that..)
So I basically have everything I need.. and not to blow smoke up my own a$$, but I'm pretty damned good at sharpening... I KNOW there are TONS of things I still don't know about knives, but lately I've been wondering what else I really need to know.. again - I have all the knives I need and can sharpen the hell out if them..

Maybe I'm just really not a knife guy.. you guys think there's any reason for me to still be here?

I feel there is. Just in the year I have been serious into USING my knives I have recognized the constant evolution and refinement in the knife industry. With the amount of manufacturers and competition there is always something new to look forward to. So even if your needs at the moment are met they can evolve and having a leg up by being involved in the knife community can help you make more educated purchases if the time comes that you must upgrade your gear. Again this is just my opinion.

Not to sound cold, but not really... I say get out while you still can, before you get bit and catch the disease, and wind up spending $$$$$$ more on more Knives you won't need...

We'll still be here for if/when you decide to return for advice, info, suggestions, or just to show off or look at some new pics...

Best of luck to ya...

We can't answer that. Only you can.

Do you want to be here ?
If so, stick around, and if not, don't.

Hope to see you stick around, but if not, take care.

Only you can answer that question. I don't get on here simply to look for the next knife, but enjoy the community and everything else contained within this forum. There's much more to be had here than just knives.

Based on your current small but efficient collection and your stated sharpening prowess, I'd say you can bail out if you're not getting any value from being here. If that's the decision you make, more power to you. If not, stick around and enjoy the fun. There's ALWAYS more to learn. :)

I don't have the itch to piss money away on things I don't need, so I don't buy knives too often anymore. I'm still here, however. :D

Yup. You like chatting with the gang here...stick around.

You feel like you have gotten every thing you can from the place? Off to new adventures!

I find there is always something new to learn, or a new person chat with, or some of my limited knowledge to share with someone new to the subject....and my quest to get rid of the phrase "survival knife" is far from complete.

Some of us like the community and sitting on the porch and shooting the breeze with our fellow brother and sister knife folks. A lot of us also support the porch by getting a Gold or higher membership. We've bought in with our buck$$ and our hearts.

But that's not for everyone.

Mike

Hah. I don't have nearly as much trouble with that moniker as I do "hard use folder". But that's a topic for another conversation . . .

But see there, Jason? The topics are endless and the personalities are priceless. That's why I stick around. :D

Honestly no one is going to beg you to stay. And unless you are stirring the pot constantly no one is going to beg that you leave. 6 years and 74 posts isnt really an indicator of anything but it could be a hint to how into the hobby you are. All I can say is that if this place was only about the knives themselves I would have bolted a long time ago. I come here for the people these days and trying to have good conversations. And even though this is a knife based forum discussions can be had on all sorts of things. But all things considering you felt compelled to ask the question. With that said, I know this may sound like a cop out but I think you need to look inside yourself for the answer and dont let any one reply positive or negative sway your decision.

Obviously, hang if you are enjoying yourself, don't if you are not.

You don't have to be buying knives to read BladeForums. It might make you want to but you can resist that, many do.

If it is getting a little boring just come less often and let more interesting stuff to look at build up.

They might discover unobtainium and you would never hear about it. Did you ever think of that?

With apologies to Chris Cooper:

jasonbroni: “Then one morning, I woke up and said, ‘F#ck knives.’ I renounce knives, I will never set foot in blade forum again. That’s how much ‘f#ck knives.’ That was 17 years ago and I have never stuck so much as a toe in blade forum. And I love the blade forum.”

me: “But why?”

jasonbroni: “Done with knives.”

Not everyone here spends obscene amounts of money on knives. Myself, I've really only purchased a very limited number of knives since I joined this site. I just did a tally, and found out I've purchased a grand total of 7 knives for myself (excluding gifts to others, or the few kitchen knives I own). The average purchase price for those 7 knives is ~$32 (which is actually higher than I thought it would be, man things have clearly gotten out of hand for me :p). I tend to buy for specific use cases, and then if I have a knife for that use, I don't really think about others for that role, which sounds a bit like you.

I do actually find myself laughing at times when people say "buy this knife, because you'll end up with one anyway", which is what many people said to me in my first few threads. And now, 4-5 years later I'm still not any closer to having those knives, and the only way I see myself getting some of them is winning them in giveaways here. So don't assume that everyone around here has (or wants) hundreds of knives.

I find that I stick around because I still have more to learn. I post far less about what I'm looking for, and instead contribute to threads where others are searching for something, and have started spending more time in the other areas of the forum (outdoor skills, sheath making, etc). I've enjoyed my time here so far, and am planning to stick around for a while longer yet.

Anyway, good luck figuring out if you want to stick around :).

Hang around? Of course, but with only 74 posts since Dec 2009, you really don't come here to chit chat. Knives provide the foundation for the forum, but there are many things that can be discussed in the various forums. So, your call (as it has always been).

Stick around! I've been on here around a week and can't believe how much I've learned just browsing threads in that short time. Granted, I'm not going to go knife crazy and buy everything I see, but I would like a small collection of usable knives to have handy, play around with and show off to friends. This forum gives me user info. to help make the right decision which to me is invaluable! Really like this form! Thanks Guys

Guess I'm not going anywhere as I still load up and browse daily... Lol. Sorry for the wasted post! (I think I was just scared of reading up on something expensive, getting the bug, and buying it! IE: a ZT or microtek... )

Honestly, if you are happy with what you have and dont want to buy more stuff it is best to move on. Having the constant updates on new knives and toys will eventually convince you that something you have is not as good as something else. The constant repitition of reading it will slowly persuade you and you will pick something new up. If you are still around in a year or so I can pretty much guarantee you will have new knives.

There are very few regular folk here that dont pick up a new toy here and there. Good luck!

I guess it really all depends on why you're here. If its just for informational purposes and you've gotten what you need, I could understand you questioning your future presence here. However, many of us, myself included, look and knives as much more than just a practical accessory. I find knives to be a very enjoyable hobby that allows an ever evolving atmosphere of learning and new products to keep me busy and having fun. I say stick around and have some fun!

You might end up buying a knifemaker membership in 10 years.

;)
