I just got home and my RAT 3 was waiting on me. No field test, plenty have already been done, but the geometry, size, 1095, and thickness of the steel tell me this is going to be my go to knife for some time. The sheath with clip and teklok is fantastic. I am going pig hunting the first week in September and plan to give it a good workout, nothing I have found will test a knife like dressing a feral pig. Chris

Got mine in D-2 I think you'll love it. I use mine regularly and have let others use it, they all have given good reviews back.

It's a great knife.

Now I'd love to see Ontario issue a RAT 5 in D2 with black micarta scales.

Just got done reprofiling the edge just a bit, the grind was off a bit up next to the tip. Believe me when I say it is scary sharp now, drop it and you might lose a toe.:D Chris

For any one interested BRK&T'S new kydex fire steel loops will fit the rat-3 sheath and any others that are set up to take a tek-lock makes an already great knife and sheath even better

Runningboar Rat-3 with loop looks pretty much like leather sheath on DLT site except loop can be worn either on leading edge or trailing edge on the RAT-3 SHEATH I would post a pic of one of mine but i have an old computer and no camera and if I don't quit buying knives that isn't gonna change any time soon LOL :D (I think you will like it)

Hey Runningboar, glad ya like it.

Does your 1095 version have tan handle scales?
I plan on getting one this month and would prefer 1095, but I would like black scales if I can find them.

Gunner,
They are tan, I think they look nice and I am sure they will darken with use. I also got lucky and got one with good fit and finish, I have heard on here about some that the scales didn't fit well. One thing I am a bit concerned about is the scales seem to be a bit porous, I plan on using this knife for game and I really don't want the handle soaking up blood and fluids. Chris

Congrats on the new Rat

My Rat 3 in D2 is easily my most used fixed blade and will remain so for a long time.

I ordered one of the firesteel loops, soon as I get it I will post a pic. Chris

Thanks again, Mike.

i was going to ask anybody if they have spray any type of aerosol water repellent on the canvas micarta handles before, the reason i ask is because the rats handles do soak up wetness but did not want to harm the handle material ?

If you want to waterproof knife handles quickly and easily, use liquid superglue.

Get some tight fitting rubber gloves, and do this in a well ventilated place.

Squirt the superglue onto the handle in small amounts, then quickly use a finger tip to spread the glue around before it dries.

If you don't like it you can take it off again with a bit of sandpaper and steel wool.

This will fill any cracks in the handle or between handle and tang, and it will water proof the handle at the same time.

Do NOT glue the knife to your hand, even if you really, really like it. People will not understand.

I may be wrong but I seem to recall this issue being asked about over on the RAT forum, the reply if I remember correctly was that the RAT-3 grips were left rough for a non slip grip and would darken a little from hand oil's but the micarta would not absorb blood or liquid's
