I miss Schrade

My best friend from childhood had a Schrade gunstock trapper with a single blade and liner lock. He got it when he was about twelve, which was when I got my first decent knife, a Victorinox Huntsman. We spent our childhood and adolescence roaming around the woods in rural mid-Michigan and we were always using our knives for this and that. One day when we were in high school, we were out at one of our spots in the woods and my friend broke about an inch off his Schrade trapper by prying at something. He was pretty bummed. He stuck it in a tree and left it there. It is probably still there, for all I know.

Fast forward to about seven years ago. He was the best man in my wedding and as a gift, I got him a Schrade gunstock trapper. It was only the Chinese version, but he didn't mind and seemed touched that I remembered his old knife (he's not a knife knut).

I still have the Huntsman.

You should check down in the Manufacturers' Forum / Collectors / Schrade Collectors forum. I know it's been discussed there, but I haven't kept up with any recent developements. Camillus and Bear were making some under contract for Taylor, but Camillus is now bancrupt, so perhaps they're all made at Bear?

OK, thanks.

They were nothing fancy, but looking through my collection of them I realized that about 95% of them had no side to side play in the blades

Yes i did the same and checked all mine after I purchased the Camillus knife recently. I checked about 20 of my Schrade folding knives and only one had noticable side play but it was a display folder so it didnt concern me. I sent the Camillus back and swapped it for the one below which has no play at all.

Schrade was my favorite for slipjoints, as others have said the fit and finish was very good, as was over all quality. I carried and old timer senior before I had dedicated hunting, fishing camping knives etc. And many would be suprised how well such a small blade works for cleaning a deer or a stringer full of trout.

Are you guys sure about Schrade using 1095? I ask because I am currently sitting on 125 lbs of very high grade 1 x 1/4 inch 1084 that I was told was from a lot ordered by Schrade and never delivered because......well, they didn't need it anymore:eek:
