Comparison posts always amuse me. Mostly because trying to get a manufacturer to step up to the plate as far as stating any performance claims is like pulling teeth. It's all a big game of "NOBODY GETS IN TROUBLE FOR SOMETHING THEY DON'T SAY". But here's my idea for a new game. . . it's a game I like to call "WE'RE STILL WAITING"

"WE'RE STILL WAITING" is a simple game. I just stand around and wait for another manufacturer to do a "LIVE" demonstration in public, at a show, with plenty of witnesses and videotaped proof of their performance tests where any one of their knives even comes CLOSE to the performance marks that Busse Combat has achieved in numerous "LIVE" demonstrations at shows across the U.S. Over 2,700 pieces of one inch hemp rope cut and the BASIC #9 still easily sliced through paper at the same section of blade where the rope cuts were made. This was done at the Blade Show in Atlanta with plenty of witnesses and photographic proof. Over 3,200 pieces of one inch hemp rope and then the same knife was put in a vice and bent well beyond 70 degrees without breaking. This was at a show in Nashville. At a show near Cleveland we chopped through 20 2x4's and still shaved with the same section of the blade. We have done more than 30 shows with performance demonstrations and find ourselves "STILL WAITING".....

As for warranties I find it laughable when "Johnny-come-lately" issues a "lifetime warranty". After a few years in business the fine print starts to be added to the warranty, until finally the warranty isn't worth the hassle it would take to prove that you didn't abuse the knife, you didn't use the knife, and you still have your receipt and videotaped proof that the knife broke while either cutting kite string or while removing it from the sheath. Busse Combat doesn't care if you're the original owner or not. . . Why would that matter? We made it, we guarantee it. . . end of story!

Comparisons between a simple high carbon steel like 1095 or any other "carbon steel" and INFI only offer more proof that I'M AN IDIOT! Only an idiot would have more than $90.00 in the steel that it takes to make ONE Battle Mistress as opposed to having less than $1.00 in a steel like 1095. See the difference? I'm paying $89.00 more for just the steel. I should immediately switch over to 1095 steel since the difference is barely noticeable by self proclaimed experts and switch our warranty to read: "Your lifetime warranty is in effect for the entire life of your knife. In the unlikely event that you actually use your knife and in doing so cause damage to said knife, the "life" of the knife would be considered terminated and would in turn void your warranty."

If you want a high carbon knife and saving money is the issue then buy a Spec Plus knife from Ontario for about $35.00. It's made out of the same 1095 steel that other knives costing over $200.00 use and I would have to imagine that the performance can't be dramatically different based on the materials used.

One more note. Starting a post off with a phrase like, "I'm not a troll" isn't really the most effective way to pose an objective remark or comment. Especially when the post is loaded with negative hearsay and innuendo.

I apologize if I seem a little irritated by this but when we take it on the chin we like to have earned the hit. Ask your favorite manufacturer to do some live performance demonstrations. . . and give you a warranty that's not limp-wristed and then feel free to include us in your comparison posts.

Live demos, a no BS guarantee, and backed by a company that has been in business for nearly twenty years. . . .yeah, I'd buy that.

Yours in nuclear comparisons,

Jerry Busse

I have a Basic 7 and performed my own test this fall. I gutted a moose, cut myself a couple of 80 yard shooting lanes through bush for deer hunting, gutted a white tail deer after which the blade was shaving sharp. I'm happy and convinced with the knife. My only beef is with the leather sheath. I had a concealex Normark sheath made to replace it.

I have some of Jerry's creations, some for show the rest for work... work is a pleasure with a BUSSE in hand... CHOP, CUT, WHACK, SMASH, SLICE, STICK, ad infinitum... oh and still SHAVE......press on Jerry.

As an owner of two Busse Combat knives and two Basics as well as several other good knives, I figure I have a right to voice an opinion here.

I have no intention of getting into any dispute with anybody, I only voice a single opinion.

Are Busses more expensive than "similar" knives? Yes. Are they tougher knives? I think so. Are they worth it? That depends.

If you want a "weekend" knife, then quite frankly, they are a lot of cheaper knives that will do the job quite well.

If you want something that can take a lot of abuse and come back for more, then you're going to pay for it it anything. Including knives.

Do I think Busse knives are the end-all-and-be-all? No. I don't think any knife is the ultimate knife. They are have they're pluses and minues - it's a question of balance.

Buy the tool that you NEED, USE it to do the things you WANT and be HAPPY!

The man has spoken.... to be compared wannabes should pass the qualifying rounds first before trying to show posturing of competing against a Busse.

1. blade quality and value
2. public test of blade performance
3. a real warranty without the lawyerese bs fine prints.

Knife warranty fine prints puzzles me real good. Disciples will blurt testimonials as to how good and a gentleman the knifemaker is that if ever he will do the right thing. Well I do not want my warranty or the "right thing" to depend on how the stars line-up to the moon. What if the knifemaker decided that planet Mars lining-up to Jupiter is a bad day to accept repairs or replacements? Knifemaker stacking-up the cards of warranty all in his favor is doing the right thing only for himself and leaves me consumer to his whim or how the planets line-up. If a knife is really good then the right thing is how Jerry Busse gives warranty to his customers. Why are they so afraid that they have to rig the warranty?

If I have not seen Busse warranty then their type of "he will do the right thing if...." warranty will be good enough for me, but Busse warranty is so clear and direct it makes others look suspicious.

So, whenever a disciple said "don't worry he will (?) do the right thing..." inspite of warranty rigged against me, I think of Busse and said to myself "Busse warranty is the right thing". How come Busse can do it and they can't?

Having their name mentioned in the same breath with the Busse, they hope to be look upon as with the same rank or status without proving themselves in the qualifying rounds.

Busse leads the way.

"Especially when the post is loaded with negative hearsay and innuendo"

Well thanks for that.

I think Busse knives are worth it, I am going to buy a Busse BM E. I have been very satisfied with the response and attention from Busse.

I quoted a reputable dealer, others had seen those comments as well. Some of my comments were unfair but I was quick to point out my error and apologise for that. I still stand by the fact that the Basic series does seem a little overpriced and back this up by your VP offering me one at a vastly discounted price. Please don`t turn your rightious anger at other manufactures towards me, that is greatly unfair and WAY of target.

General,

What research did you find that you feel the Basic lines are over priced? From all the research reading posts, various blade forum tests, and talking with Jerry, I feel it's a damn good value. The warranty itself is worth its weight.

Jerry,
You already know my opinion of your knives. The bottom line is they do what I want them to do and I like the way they do it, all 5 of them
biggrin.gif
. As for the warranty, it's very generous, but if a knife breaks doing what ever it is that I'm doing I would not want another I would want a better knife! This assumes that the knife was not defective in some way and that I chose the right tool for the job. Knives can't do everything.

All,
IMHO, comparison testing by somebody else is of little value to me. One knife may be better than another at cutting some material or it may bend further than another. These tests will separate the bad from the good and the good from the very good but they can't separate the very good from the excellent. The knives we discuss, mostly, are in that latter catagory. ANY ONE of them would do most, if not all, of the things we would need them to do, within reason.
It all comes down to personal preference. Hence the recent heated debates. We can't seem to quantify exactly why we like our favorite knives, we just do, for the most part, and it's hard to convince us otherwise.

Rich

Jerry:

You are fighting the same battle that every company that make an honest product fights.

I believe John Ruskin said, " There is hardly anything that a man can make that another man can't make a little poorer and sell a little cheaper. The man who only considers price is his fair game." That may not be the exact quote, but it's pretty close. Ruskin was a smart man.

Trying to prove that your knives performance only works for believers. Your competition would never risk loosing "face". It's better for them to battle you with words. That way, they don't have to prove anything.

Way to go,Jerry. I do have one complaint, though, and I hope I don't have to take legal action. That teddy bear that Andy shot and stabbed in the locked thread wasn't hurting anyone. And the way that choil got stuck in the poor padded creature was excessive abuse. I hope you will take this under consideration and send me any inventory that was supposed to go to Mr Prisco

You are right on. The problem is getting them to stand toe to toe against Busse. They won't do it, because the other guys aren't as sure of their product as Jerry is.

A very well known bladesmith was taking flack from a knifemaker about how ground knives are just as good as forged ones. When the bladesmith grabbed a knife off of his table and suggested that the blade grinder step outside for a little testing session, you guessed it, BS walked again.

I don't know the source, but there is an old saying that goes something like "The proof of the puddin is in the eatin".

Like many on this thread have alluded to, the other makers can brag their products up as much as they want. Take the test.

That should be the Busse battle cry.

"Take the Test!"

I won't ramble. It's this simple.

Take the Test...
