Comparison posts always amuse me. Mostly because trying to get a manufacturer to step up to the plate as far as stating any performance claims is like pulling teeth. It's all a big game of "NOBODY GETS IN TROUBLE FOR SOMETHING THEY DON'T SAY". But here's my idea for a new game. . . it's a game I like to call "WE'RE STILL WAITING"
"WE'RE STILL WAITING" is a simple game. I just stand around and wait for another manufacturer to do a "LIVE" demonstration in public, at a show, with plenty of witnesses and videotaped proof of their performance tests where any one of their knives even comes CLOSE to the performance marks that Busse Combat has achieved in numerous "LIVE" demonstrations at shows across the U.S. Over 2,700 pieces of one inch hemp rope cut and the BASIC #9 still easily sliced through paper at the same section of blade where the rope cuts were made. This was done at the Blade Show in Atlanta with plenty of witnesses and photographic proof. Over 3,200 pieces of one inch hemp rope and then the same knife was put in a vice and bent well beyond 70 degrees without breaking. This was at a show in Nashville. At a show near Cleveland we chopped through 20 2x4's and still shaved with the same section of the blade. We have done more than 30 shows with performance demonstrations and find ourselves "STILL WAITING".....
As for warranties I find it laughable when "Johnny-come-lately" issues a "lifetime warranty". After a few years in business the fine print starts to be added to the warranty, until finally the warranty isn't worth the hassle it would take to prove that you didn't abuse the knife, you didn't use the knife, and you still have your receipt and videotaped proof that the knife broke while either cutting kite string or while removing it from the sheath. Busse Combat doesn't care if you're the original owner or not. . . Why would that matter? We made it, we guarantee it. . . end of story!
Comparisons between a simple high carbon steel like 1095 or any other "carbon steel" and INFI only offer more proof that I'M AN IDIOT! Only an idiot would have more than $90.00 in the steel that it takes to make ONE Battle Mistress as opposed to having less than $1.00 in a steel like 1095. See the difference? I'm paying $89.00 more for just the steel. I should immediately switch over to 1095 steel since the difference is barely noticeable by self proclaimed experts and switch our warranty to read: "Your lifetime warranty is in effect for the entire life of your knife. In the unlikely event that you actually use your knife and in doing so cause damage to said knife, the "life" of the knife would be considered terminated and would in turn void your warranty."
If you want a high carbon knife and saving money is the issue then buy a Spec Plus knife from Ontario for about $35.00. It's made out of the same 1095 steel that other knives costing over $200.00 use and I would have to imagine that the performance can't be dramatically different based on the materials used.
One more note. Starting a post off with a phrase like, "I'm not a troll" isn't really the most effective way to pose an objective remark or comment. Especially when the post is loaded with negative hearsay and innuendo.
I apologize if I seem a little irritated by this but when we take it on the chin we like to have earned the hit. Ask your favorite manufacturer to do some live performance demonstrations. . . and give you a warranty that's not limp-wristed and then feel free to include us in your comparison posts.
Live demos, a no BS guarantee, and backed by a company that has been in business for nearly twenty years. . . .yeah, I'd buy that.
Yours in nuclear comparisons,
Jerry Busse
