I decided to take Maisy to the beach today and had planned to take some pics of me chopping wood with my Tracker etc to post on here !

When I arrived at the parking lot I discovered that I had only got one glove, no biggie I thought I can always stick my hand in my pocket if it gets cold !!!!!

Now the weather for here says it is -2 degrees today but here on the beach there was a wind blowing so hard that I had trouble walking in it , you do the maths for the windchill factor !!!

Within minutes my body was frozen and my eyes watering so badly that I could hardly see, I quickly tried to find a little cover where I could start a fire and get warm.
This was where my problems started, the wind was so strong that my Bic ( this was no time for fire-steels ! ) would no even produce a flame despite my best efforts to cover it, I then went onto my Zip fire-starters, it lit straight away and then blew out just as fast !!! I then tried a windproof match, this lit after a couple of strikes but burnt out before I could light the Zip lighter. By now I was losing feeling in my fingers, I tried to light another windproof match, struggling much more now as I couldn't feel the match properly it took quite a few attempts to light it, when eventually it did the same thing happened and it burnt out before igniting my Zip lighter.
At this point I could no longer pick up the matches so placed my hands under my armpits for a minute or so until I could once again grab a match, this time I was in luck and managed to get a fire going !!!!

This was the view from my shelter, I had to take one pic and then warm my hands again to take another......crazy weather eh !!!

By now my fire was starting to take hold.....

This pic was the hardest to take because it meant me moving from the fire and getting cold again to take it....check out my expression !!!!

I drank some tea and once I was feeling a little warmer headed back to the car as quick as I could !

I wish the pics did the temperature a little more justice, even when I got back to the car I had to rub my hands hard for about 5 mins before I could drive the car home !

Nice pics! You look less than enthusiastic about the situation, and Maisy looks like she's in 'grin and bear it' mode.

Situations like that are what makes me pack my PSK with five or six different fire-making methods. Sometimes, the circumstances will allow you the time to make a little pile of magnesium shavings - but not always!

Wild temperature fluctuation here today as well - and, as usual, the Toronto skyline can't compete with the view from the coast. We started off around 9 above, and it is supposed to drop to -8 before the windchill later this afternoon. I like the cold - but I like things to be consistent over the course of a day, too.

All the best,

- Mike

You look frigid! Wow.

Good job getting the fire going.

How far were you from the car?

Maisy is a hoot! That look on her face is priceless.
Thanks for the pics and glad to see you warmed up enough to type again.

I have this image of somewhere on a dog forum, Maisy is posting this picture under the heading..."Look what I can make my human do"! :D

Great pic's!!!

Man that just looks cold!!!!!!!! You are more dedicated than I am when it comes to getting outdoors. I bet Maisy was wishing that she was back at home in front of that fireplace, well I sure you probably were to.

WOW! That looks like some bad wind you got going there. I'm glad I don't live near the shore here. Maisy still looks like she is smiling for the camera though! LOL
Maybe next time try to light the lighter or matches under your coat? Then again the wind might be way to strong in your case.
Great pics as always!

next time you're out take a small bottle of hand sanitizer like purrell with you and try throwing a spark on that.

might work better in the wind then the bic/matches, not 100% sure.

enjoy the nice weather its supposed to snow again sometime next week,

cheers.

Yeah Iv'e tried that before bro and it does work well in calm to moderate breezes but like I mentioned these winds were so strong I could hardly walk.
I think the only way in this weather is to try and form some kinda wind beak but it's amazing how the quickly the cold saps your energy and morale !!!:o

:grumpy: Right now it's -20 in North Dakota but they say that tonight it's gonna really get cold. -30.

You know when I was younger this crap wasn't so bad but it sure has ceased to be enjoyable now. This darn cold makes every harder. Almost;) Anyway, Nice pictures Pit.

Got all the way up to 6 above here in Nebraska today. The wind wasn't quite as bad as up your way pit, but yesterday it was about that bad. Tomorrow it's supposed to be a bit warmer and start snowing. Don't have any tests(finals week here at the university), so I might slip out for a short hike in the afternoon.

-20 is just darn cold no matter what way you look at it. I remember doing chores back on the farm many times in -15 or -20 weather... not fun, especially when the wind is 35mph.

Looks like you need a shell overtop that flannel for a bit of wind protection. I agree though, fire can be really fickle sometimes and it is good to have options. I wonder if the tobasco sized bottles with some lamp oil or white gas might have helped this a bit. The white gas should be able to ignite with a firesteel spark and that might help with the wind??? Just brainstorming here.

Looks like a cold one. Cold + wet moisture is a horrible feeling!

Damn Pit, you look cold!!

-2 is way too cold for me! Luckily we had some unseasonable warm weather here in CT, it almost hit 60 today.

Geez man, looking rough! Must have been a heck of a feeling, hate when you start losing feeling in extremities.

Maisie has a look on her, "Please save me! My psychotic human is dragging me out in this weather..."

Way to be persistent Pit! I wimped out big time on my plan to build a fire here yesterday and today. It was freezing rain yesterday, then turned to snow. This morning is was -6 (I don't know what the windchill was) and it was -5 on my ride home from work. Brrrr!

Went out bow huting this last sat afternoon pre-storm here in North Dakota with the hopes of catching the deer moving. I went out at noon and almost made it till dark, the actuall temp was close to zero, however the windchill was in the high teens. I was layred in wool but my boots are too old and have lost the ability to keep my feet warm. I had about a mile walk back to the truck on frozen "stumps". Being that cold is not fun, I did have the means to start a fire if I would have had to. Glad you made back to the vehicle ok Pit. Neg 14 with a -33 deg windchill right now brrrrr.

My hands, feet and ears are really the only parts of me that get cold. Therefore I always have a spare pair of gloves with me. If you ever get to a golf shop I really recommend a pair of Footjoy winter gloves. They are just warm enough and fit really snug. They fit in a jacket pocket nicely so you always have them.
Thank the Mrs again for making you put your clothes back on!
