I need a better sheath for my new RC-5

I pride myself in my powers of reasoning, imagination, and sense of humor, all being tested by the current economical and political state of our union, but I don't understand the sheath on my RC-5. Oh, I have another MOLLE-monster sheath - the one that came with the LMFII I got for Pappy's Day last summer. Most of it's unnecessary appendages were easily and reversibly removed. Not so this 'thing' that came with my RC-5.

It's top, what I thought to be a belt loop, is multi-layered velcro - unsatisfactory for a regular belt. The snap secured strap on the back runs from midway down the handle to the bottom - too high and sloppy for a belt. If it's MOLLE-compatible, where are the holes? The horizontal straps on the sheath's backside - and the elastic one on the accessory sheath on the front seem superfluos. That securing strap and snap closure on said sheath is overkill. The one easily removed component is the elastic leg strap, which, even fully extended, is an effective tourniquet if you have tree trunk thighs like mine. I could remove the undesired parts - but belt hanging is still a problem. I need a better sheath!

Seriously - is there a standard Sharpshooter leather sheath available, for example, for the RC-5? I need a sheath - but I don't want one that cost a significant fraction of what the RC-5 and current sheath cost me. Also, is this supplied sheath made by the 'company' referred to by some in less than glowing terms? Thanks!

Wow, never thought I would hear this one..... I think the sheath for the RC5 is the GREAT. More so for the price. I am surprised they sell this bombproof knife and sheath for a little as they do. As for the belt loop. Its velcro so you can remove or place the knife on the belt without removing it. The molle back can be confusing. The long stip of fabric can be threaded between the knife and the item you wish to install it on. No extra strap or anything needed. The pouch is big enough to hold a altoids can, the elastic band can secure the firesteel (I look 550 cord thru the lid and around one of the molle/ PAL grids, still easily removed, but not lost). Only difference I would have liked is extra material across the top of the pouch to prevent loss of an item, but the everything fits the can, its GTG.

Real MOLLE gear (as in issued MOLLE gear), has that strap on the back. Like Spoolup said, you thread that through the PALS webbing and the webbing on the back of the sheath to secure it like true MOLLE gear, not with paracord or MALICE clips or TacTies.

The sheath is overkill because it's supposed to be jump-rated, as in military paratroopers, ejecting from a plane, etc without coming off your gear. Only real problem is the lack of a flap to cover the pouch, which has been the only complaint I've heard from other people as well. I suppose that could be fixed if you can sew. Also, some have cut off one of the two straps that go over the handle portion.

If you really hate it, you can wait for the kydex/plastic one to come out and see if you can order it as a replacement, send it off for custom kydex or leather, or buy a Spec-Ops sheath. If you don't want a pouch, Spec-Ops makes a version with PALS webbing where the pouch usually is (and you could cut that off if you never want to put anything there).

I didn't care for a few features of the RC-5 sheath either so I put mine in a Spec-Ops Combat Master.

here is my aftermarket sheath by Rainwalker, I prefer leather on most of my knives as it is so for me it wasn't as much as I didn't like the sheath that came with it but I would never wear a sheath like that weather it be the eagle or even a spec ops.

I'm not a big fan of that sheath either, I always liked my handles sticking out the sheaths, like the kydexes. Shotgunner sent me one of his kydexes, should be here soon!!

silverbullets,

I like that leather sheath - about how much was that - just a ballpark figure? Where is 'Rainwalker' located?

Thanks!

If I remember right the sheath was 39.00 for the sheath pluse 17.00 for the pouch. It is ambidextrous which I wanted, you can pretty much have him do whatever you want. There is a wait time though, not sure where it currently stands. Here is his web site

he also posts here so you can pm him as well but email would probably be the easiest way.
good luck, a good sheath makes all the difference in the world when carrying a blade in the back country  As for where he is located, I am pretty sure he is down in Tenn

I swear.. I think you are my Brother. LOL on the Freakin' Floor.

"Darn Fanangled Straps.... Stupid buttons... ugh.. gimme a club" :D

I honestly forget the name of a Manufacturer I saw on another Site.. I will see if I can find it and post. Plain leather sheath for the RC5... I think.

Thanks for the Laugh though.

IMO this is one of the best Factory Sheath available ,I never had a problem on my belt and it came with a leg strap to do away with the flopping issue.... the knife was not designed for us GI Average Joe's .... So I can see your need in a more simple sheath... Leather is great I suggest you get on the list soon the waits can be long,LOL I been on one Since Nov 08 ,Kydex maybe your fastest & easiest option ... If sheath is OD green I'd be interested in it...

personally I think the sheath it comes with is well made and one of the better nylon molle sheaths I have seen with the exception of spec ops. That said the sheath serves a purpose, unfortunately i am not in the military and do not have a need for a tactical type of sheath and quite frankly wearing a sheath like that is liable to get you more looks than it is worth. I use my blades soley for camping and hiking and a nice comfortable leather rig serves me best. I will add the eagle nylon sheath does fit my Bark River modified Becker BkII like a glove.

I really never thought I would hear such a complaint on the sheath  I love the thing.

There is a lot of custom makers out there, talk to them and see if you can have one done

no worries brother, I have never been one to care what people think of me. It is like when the wife and I went up to Oregon to visit her family, i carried a sidearm around town, only because it was legal and I could get away with it. Anyway you can imagine the looks when you do that ;)

I like the RC-5 sheath and it now doubles as a PSK/Fire Starter holder. Plus its got an RC-5 in it! :D
