Hello All,

I have my Izula now, but I still need one more RAT(for now). I am looking for a camp knife. Now I am in no way a survivalist, just guy who likes to camp. I spend a fair amount of time at our families farm where we camp, fish, cook, sit by the fire, chill out, etc. I need (want) a RAT to use for general camping needs. Cutting up meat for the grill, Maybe make a little kindling, cutting some rope, and just wittlin at some wood by the fire. Nothing real heavy duty.

I have been thinking about the RC-4. It seems to be the "middle of the road" RAT in terms of size. What do you all think?
I have always preferred plain edge knives, but what do you all think about the combo edge? Im also thinking about the Desert Tan to go with my Black Izula.

Thanks for the help folks

rc4's a great knife i have one, the only thing i would have done different is to get the orange handles. im an avid hunter and mots times cleaning deer at night. i'v set mine down a couple of times and had to get the flashlight to find it. the orange would be way easier to find if you put it down in the woods

For your taskes i'd recommend the RC-3 because of it's thinner profile it will cut meat a bit easier. I'd stay away from the combo edge if you are gonna be using it for kindling and whittling.

But because you already have an Izula, you can't go wrong with the RC-4.

I personally love the contrast with the black and grey scales, too much tan for me when and blade and handle are both tan. I remember seeing a RC-4 with a black blade and orange scales in the picture thread that looked amazing.

i agree, i also have an rc3 and it is a lil better being slightly smaller. i've used all my rats to clean and cape they all work well. it just a matter of personal preference.

I forgot about the orange handled version:confused:

Also, I dont need the Molle stuff right know but Ill probably get the kit with that stuff any way, just to have it. How do I carry the sheath on my belt?
Can you use the molle clips or is there a "belt clip" you can get.

Are the sheaths different between the RC-3 and RC-4?

Thanks,

The RC-3 comes in a plastic molded sheath.

While the RC-4 comes in a kydex sheath.

The backing is optional

The rat site is full of great info

Good luck making a decision, took me a while before i jumped on the RC-4. Every other day i wanted a different RAT.

I agree but i would get the RC6 over the RC4. Same blade thickness just the RC6 is longer making it a better wood splitter than the RC4

I'm managing just fine with an Izula and RC-5. You know, you can't go wrong with any combination and that's part of the allure of the RAT pack.

I suspect either the RC3 or 4 would meet your stated needs quite well - the RC5/6 might be a bit big for whittling.

I bought the RC-4 for a "general woods knife" and it's been a great knife. My favorite RAT. The RC-3 is also a great knife and I really like it.

I use my Moras for delicate chores around camp and in the camp kitchen. My Rats work better for the HD work.

Personally, as far as camping goes, I'd take the RC 3 and an axe, but you certainly wouldn't regret getting an RC 4 either.

While the RC-4 can do a bit more, for your purposes, assuming you had both the RC-3 and RC-4, I think you'd be reaching for the RC-3 more. Also, the RC-3 would probably be better/safer for non-knife people in your family, and a better/easier knife to teach kids to use (assuming you have).

i've got the izula and the rc 4. covers everything i do from hunting to camping.
iam getting either the rc 5 or rc 6 next, because i want to start batonning.
if you hang around here long enough you come up with all kind's of excuse's
to buy another rat!!!

Have you considered adding something that glows in the dark to the handle or lanyard? They sell all sorts of glow-in-the-dark stuff in the kids isle and office supply section at Walmart.
