I need a do all fixed blade

Another esee 3 vote. Its my edc and the thinnner blade lets it slice through anything with ease. But its tough enough to baton with if you want. And you cant beat the service and warranty. If you want something a little longer and a little more stout the 4 is a good option.

I would look into the Tops Dragonfly.
Its a few bucks over your budget but a fantastic companion knife.
With a 1/8th thin blade, it works very well as a cutting tool and takes a fair beating.

BK-16 vs BK-17.... really depends on what you're going to use the knife for. Yes, the point or tip of the BK-16 should be a little stronger than the BK-17. I like the BK-16 a lot.

why the 17 over the 16? looks like the tip on the 16 would be more durable and less prone to bending

Bend? Nope. The tip is super strong; it is very thick. I belive that the tip of the 16 would be weaker actually, as the 16 is FFG, and thus thinner at the tip. Here is a picture that I took after stabbing it tip first into ice to chop a hole:

The 16 is probably my favorite ~4" knife for under $100, and if $100 is your limit you can put some micarta scales on it too. I've batoned mine through oak with no problems.

Scrap Yard Mud Mutt at $120ish a little extra for a sheath.

Swamp Rat Rodent 3 at $110ish a little extra for sheath.

KaBar Mark 1 at or around $50ish

Tops Dragonfly around $120ish

Swamp Rat Rodent Solution around $130ish a little extra for a sheath

Scrap Yard 311 around $80ish a little extra for a sheath

Scrap Yard 411 around $100ish a little extra for sheath

KaBar USMC mini around $50ish

KaBar USMC full size around $50ish

Helle Eggen around $90ish

Buck 119 around $40ish

Cold Steel SRK around $80ish

Cold Steel Master Hunter around $85ish

Condor Bushlore around $50ish

Condor Kephart around $50ish

Condor Nessmuk around $40ish

Condor Lifeland Hunter around $40ish

And many MANY more it took less than 5 minutes for me to rattle off these suggestions. However if you have the batoning blade already perhaps you should carry a complimenting combo of camp knife/with a fillet or skinner which is much better than a jack-of-all master of none knife.

I own all the Becker Tweeners, both the ESEE 3&4 as well as the F1, and id pick the Fallkniven, hands down....followed by the ESEE knives and then the Beckers.

getting closer, but the look of the grip just turns me off

I didn't like the look of the F1, F2 grip either! :D
I rehandled my F2 in stag and Nickelsilver and it has become my favorite allrounder for the Outdoors.
That's why it's in my avatar.

This F2 is from the older stock, wich has a 4,5 mm spine.
It was sold with a 50% discount and I got it for around $70.
The stag and leather was another $30, so the cost was around $100 + my homework.

Today this older version of the F2 is only availible on the secondhand market, but the F1 would also be good with a new handle!.

love the tops dragonfly look
It really complements a heavy chopper and smaller knife.
The blade is thin and just the right size for general use.
Don't let the photos fool you, it is a full sized knife with a 5 inch handle that feels great in hand.

A little flexibility with ones budget can go a long way.
There are many options just over $100 that are worth mentioning.
I picked up my DF for under $110

That's great, but sometimes you have to have a limit. The OP said $100; IMO mentioning anything over $100 is not helpful and rubs the $100 mark in the OP's face.

Not trying to start a war--just stating my views.

I would prefer the bk16 price which is why i have not bought the blackbird. Love the flat grind and spear point with micarta handles, similar to the tops dragonfly. What steel is it? And how does 154 cm compare to 1095?

Fine... but if thats your view, why post a link to your review of the mudd mutt? Its well over $100 without a sheath.

OK... for an all rounder, under a hundred bucks, in the mid size range, I would go with the Coldsteel Master Hunter.
