drill bits...

i dont want "el cheapos" i have a good 12 piece Ti Nitride set that i love. but i need a bigger set (with sizes to set up for tapping etc.)

i dont want to pay $250 for it though.

any decent (not super hi-quality, since i dont use them non-stop every day) multi-piece (60 or so) sets for under $100?

i know, you generally get what you pay for, but hell...i dont own a machine shop so i figure middle of the road will do.

I just buy the sizes I need. To me, unless I were a machinist, a drill index is useless.

For knifemaking I just use bits for 3/32, 1/8, 5/32 and 1/4. I actually use the number size bits that are a bit larger. I have number of each size and am able to keep a pretty good supply of them in the shop.

Check with MSC. I bought a combo set (letter, number, & fractional) from them a while back. I purchased the cheaper set then buy a pack of a dozen or so of the ones that I find that I use the most. You never know when you might need a special size drill ,so a set like this is very handy to have.

I agree with CL, there are key sizes you need, and multiples of those sizes are what you'll actually use, even as a hobbyist. Check to see what size holes you'll drill for tapping and pass through holes, and what sizes you'll need to have reamers for too, and buy those.

Listen to these guys, I just buy mulitples of the sizes I actually use. Mostly 1/16", 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" and I like the cobalt bits. That was Tom Mayo's advice to me on this same question years ago on this forum.

fair enough, it just kills me to look at single bits costing $10 when an entire set of the same kind is about $70 or so.

course i do have a good starter set, could just add a key couple more...

thanks fellers

Single bits costing $10?
You're lookin in the wrong place my friend. Go to
www.mscdirect.com
and click on browse and then drill bits and then jobbers bits. The rest is self explanatory.

are Ti Nitride coated bits much better than the cobalt ones? (cuz they sure are more expensive)

I Buy all of My Number Size drill bit's From a Quality Tool Store in Solid Cobalt They are 2 - 8 Buck's Each for "Large Sizes " 2 Buck's for a Solid Cobalt Drill Bit that is American Made is Very cheap as I See it !! Sharpen it and now that one bit can Last a long time !! I Don't trust The "Coated Bit's " Just My Opinion !! A Numbered Set is Only about $ 60 .00 in High Speed From "Hanson " Brand !!:D ;)

I got a full set (115 pieces)of TiN coated bits from ebay a while back for real cheap, I think around $40. But, if you want quality go for the cobalt. They are much better in my opinion.
