I need a good small EDC Folder

How knife known are they? For my wife who is not very mechanically minded, I had her tried the EDC, Paragee general framelocks and linerlocks. Her response, " I dont like the unlocking, where I have to put my finger in the blades path, whats more the blade are so sharp!!) She now have the BM550 and 555 Griptillion.

So, I would suggest that the BM 940 would be the way to go.

YMMV.

If I had the dough...I'd buy everyone I love a sm.seb, and I'd have more on hand to give to those few extraordinary folks I meet from time to time... HOWEVER, I WOULD explain what a damn fine piece of work they hold in their hands...show them the attention to detail taken in each nook and corner, and explain that this creation was BORN and has a BIRTHDAY. If necessary, I'd give them the do's and dont's of knife use/carry.

For less than $150... get your bro's each an Emerson mini CQC7. Hardly short of a seb for a third the price!

If you got the $$$ get daddy a Sebenza. Classic woodies go for $320 all over tha place. Mnandi??? NEW sebs are going on ebay for $233!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY EXPERIENCE--stay away from Benchmade. Its just a name. Somehow folks are convinced that Tommy Hilfiger makes good backpacks.. go figure. No offense to BM folks. CRKT and Gerber do equal work for half the price. BM's are prettier, not better. MY OPINION.

I would say it depends on the model. While knife preferences are pretty subjective, you're still going to be hard pressed to find a better all around knife than the 710; at least nothing mass produced or in its price range. The Pinnacle (now discontinued I believe) was also a great knife but was probably too ugly for the typical non knife knut buyer, and was unfairly dismissed as a "poor man's Sebenza" by some. While these aren't small EDC knives, I consider the 710's little bro, the 705, worthy of being a small EDC for anyone.

I'm not a huge BM fan either but I have to admit that some of their knives, particularly the 710 and it's smaller sibling 705, are very well made.

BM's aren't better than CRKTs and Gerbers? Hmm, you must have gotten a lemon from BM. I own the BM 710, 705 and 940, and have handled other BM models. They are all outstanding knives; I've never seen a CRKT or Gerber that come close to that kind of quality.

check out the benchmade 770bc1. if you want to get them a smallish(not too small) knife. it is real cool looking. i asked questions about how long it would last. it is probably tougher than it looks. as with any bm make sure you pick a good one. in many ways i like this knife better than a umfaan. it should impress non knife people more than a reeve knife imho.

holdanedge.

Thank you everyone for your input. It looks like their are alot of options to go over. I will probably go with Sebenza for my Father. He was a Tool and Die Engineer for 32 years and would be impressed with the workmanship and material (hopefully).

That would be a great choice. The small Sebenza is a fantastic EDC, and it sounds like he'd really appreciate the genius and simplicity of its design, and how well it actually works in practice. It locks up like a fixed blade. I chose the regular model for its finger ridges and looks; others like the classic model for its thumb stud cutout and pointier blade.

Let us know which knives you buy and how the recipients like them! :)
