I need a knife

Hey guys and gals, I have been looking for over a year and have not found what I am looking for.

This is a new guy post, but I did try to search. Basically what I am trying to determine if there is a boxed solution, or if I just need to commission a knife with someone who can build to suit.

I am bad about using knives for other than knife tasks. So what I am looking for is essentially a big feild knife. Not necessarily a bowie. But I tend to beat the snot out of my knives, in construction, the feild, and my shop. I like the Fallniven Thor.... But I really need a heavier pommel that is well fixed(I have knocked them off. And I am not well aquainted with this knife company or it's choices in steel or construction. Does anyone make such a thing?

Seconding a CPK.

Hm, that Fallkniven looks a lot like a Cold Steel Trail Master. Which makes me think although it's not that big, the Cold Steel Drop Forged Hunter might be up your alley, atleast as far as using your pommel as a hammer.

Checked that out. They make a couple other larger knives in that category I like better. But I have had bad luck with Cold Steel and edge retention. My last one,I gave away because I had to spend a lot of time sharpening it. Not cool.

I appreciate your attempt... I have such things.... But I never remember to carry a hammer. And just end up bashing things with my pommel. The KaBar did best. Too many Rambo jokes. Bad memories. Don't wanna talk about it.

Lol. My second post was an attempt at humor. :) However, CPK’s are fantastic knives. Definitely check them out.

Welcome to the forums! Fallkniven has taken quite a bit of abuse from me. I have the A1 and it works well as a bush craft blade and it sounds like it would fit your needs except I am not sure the pommel would be big enough to smash things very well. It is full tang, and does protrude out the bottom some but is fairly skinny. You could have someone weld something to it maybe...

Thanks.

If you are able to knock the pommel off a Fallkniven Thor, I would recommend to you the Ontario Jet Pilot's Survival Knife.

Busse, Swamprat, scrap yard make early indestructible knives with amazing warranties. They use INFI (proprietary steel...amazingly strong/tough basically stainless), SR101 (52100 with their proprietary heat treat and cryo). Scrapyard uses various steels, often Sr101, some times INFI, they used to use a lot of Sr77 (S7 jackhammer steel).

Sr101 (52100) is one of my favorite carbon steels. Ball bearing steel, very fine grained, absolutely a joy to sharpen. Stains/patinas easily. Will rust if not cared for. Still love it.

CPK (Carothers Performance Knives) make stellar knives our of CPM3V. Super tough steel, better edge retention than INFI. Not as stainless...but I've been carying two custom fixed blades in this steel for two years. No rust or discoloration so far. Little harder to sharpen, but holds the edge longer.

CPM3V is probably my favorite hard use steel. Best balance of toughness/strength and edge retention.

I am still leaning towards that Thor. The makers you have mentioned seam high quality indeed, but those pomels don't seam sufficient.
