I would like to know how many different colored handled GRAY Matriarchs there were. I was told there was a gray handle Matriarch for Bladeforums, and it was limited. Then there is a Dark Gray handle, or is this the limited one? I thought I saw a light gray handle, on the limited Bladeforums one. PLEASE HELP. If anyone can send me a picture of what they look like, I would be very grateful. THANK-YOU. EMAIL: toyfj70@yahoo.com

Story I heard was that a run of grey ones were made to fullfill a contact which called for fewer knives, balance were offered on BladeForums. If that's true, there would have been around 1200 grey ones, total. Am hardly an expert on them though. Can tell you that mine is a rather dark grey. Will takes some photos tomorrow if nobody else posts any before then.

As far as I know, the gray handled Matriarchs were a special run of 500 for Bladeforums members.

Had some time, took a couple shots. Topmost knife in first photo is a black FRN Glocktool Endura for color comparison, balance are examples of the various grey FRN Spydercos I own, including the Matriarch. Bottom photo is just a tighter shot of the five grey ones.

Mike, you could very well be right, found something on the Spyderco Factory Forum that at least suggests there was a BF Matriarch, yet all I have ever seen were unmarked. Date of that post would indicate those knives were made prior to the launch of the Spyderco Factory Forum. Have no way to search here, but that hardly matters since the search function here wasn't worth a rat's ass even when I was a gold member. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm no expert on this model.

It wasn’t a forum model. It was offered to forum members at a special deal price. With a max of three per member.

I don’t remember of these were over runs or an addition to a contract run.

The gray Matriarchs were made especially for members of BladeForums, but I don't remember them having any unique markings on the blade that would identify it as being a "forum knife". Someone posted a pic of a prototype on the forum in early '99, I think, and people started clamoring for one. IIRC, forumites helped choose the handle color for the run. I don't know if any other gray handled Matriarchs were made after that.

In the thread pyrguy linked to, Sal mentioned that some of them would also be made available to LEOs. In late '99, I remember seeing the gray handled Matriarch for sale at SFO. There was a little note next to it in the display case which stated that you had to show proof you're in law enforcement in order to buy the knife. It sounds kind of silly now, but that was before the MBC program and Spyderco didn't want to develop a reputation for selling "cheap weapons". The Civilian had been around before that, but it was more expensive and never advertised (I don't think it even appeared in catalogs).

Hello everyone. I just wanted to say thank-you for all the help. What would I do without you guys? Thanks again, Aaron
