I need a more "socially acceptable" knife...

Well, I was at a birthday dinner with my friends and the cake was being served. It was wrapped with a plastic sheet over the edge and one of my friends was struggling to get it off..I yelled at him and told him to cut it off, he answered with "with what?". I pulled out my BM5000 (I opened it slowly, so the auto feature wasn't the problem)(NO, I don't normally carry it around, I was just getting home from borrowing a buddy's sharpening stone) and tell him, here use this...I instantly got a comment, "why do you carry that?", to which I instantly replied "for times like that"

So yea, I'm deciding between a
BM 555 BLU (prefer the lime, but harder to find)
BM 707
Spyderco Spin
Spyderco Cricket
I voted against a SAK, because I need something locking

I'm hoping to supplement my PMillie with any, but I may need it to be stand alone. Thanks

The Kiwi and Kopa are nice, but the handle style doesn't float my boat. Thanks!

SPIN or Cricket are my choices. Small, good cutters (try the Cricket in SE).

Poop on those sheeple. Carry and use your Benchmade. It's a fine knife that you should feel proud to carry, not villainized.

I love it! Pull out the auto to cut the plastic wrap off a cake!

I carry BMade 530 (not auto) which has a very unfriendly looking dagger-style blade. But . . . I also carry at least two additional knives (saks) on me as well. Saks are used around people, BMade 530 is used when no one is looking.

Of what you listed, I think the cricket is most unassuming. That would get my vote.

You are aware that there are locking SAKs?

The Nomad is about $25.00 of liner locking political correctness.

Personally I EDC a BM 806D2 and a Vic Spartanlite, the latter of which is always the one that appears before the sheeple.

Err, NOT carrying the BM, not NYC legal. (I brought it used hard, with not a lot of metal removed from the edge, but for 30% of the normal price)
Also, if I'm carrying a SAK, it better have scissors, so yea.
Thanks

Sounds to me like the sheeple incident was more of a non-incident. But don't let that stop you from buying a new knife. :)

Yeah, I hate when the cake knife folds on my hand. ;)

Who says SAKs don't lock? Victorinox makes a number of lockblade SAKs; I've got a Vic Rucksack in my EDC rotation that's nice and socially acceptable for a locking 3" blade :).

The Spin and Cricket are great little framelocks, sharp, handy, unobtrusive. I do love the Cricket but the Spin is even nicer. Even when you carry a larger knife, they aren't a bad idea to have around because some jobs really are easier to do with a small blade.

You could also go for another small Spydie like the Navigator or Dragonfly, classic keychain knives. You could also toss a traditional slipjoint in your pocket, a stockman or trapper or muskrat. Queen has beautiful slipjoints in D2 with a variety of handle scales.

I always carry a Victorinox Classic: blade, scissors, nailfile/screwdriver, tweezer & toothpick.

COOL! I didn't know they had lockbacks. Got to get one now.

But I'm still sticking with my EDC folder rotation (Ritter Grip, Delica, Blur, etc.), my small SAK, and kabotan. If anyone asks why I carry the folder, I just tell them:
to cut seatbelts off people in burning cars, to kill pit bulls attacking old ladies, and to gut people that ask me why I carry a knife when it none of their friggin business.

It's hard to beat the vic classic. Lots of tools and options with that package.

it doesn't sound like you need a more socially accepted knife, it sounds like you need more knife acceptable friends.
had you bitten the plastic wrap off would they ask you why you have teeth?

I'd prob go with the grip, since you're saying it may need to be standalone without the para, the spyders are on the small side and I'm just not a fan of aluminum scales (707). But what's wrong with the para as a socially acceptable knife?

Correct. Use a katana if you want, that's what makes you smarter and more civilized than people who want to rip stuff open with their teeth.

Of the knives you mention, the BM707 would be my choice. It's a great little knife.
