I need a more "socially acceptable" knife...

I picked this up a few days ago and really like it. It has a 2.5" CV blade and yellow delrin scales.

I was going to suggest this very knife! Elegant, slim, awesome steel, and a lockback. Fantastic gentlemans EDC and will only set you back about thirty bucks. I carry mine to the office a lot, and it's a great knife.

Case yellow CV mini Copperlock. You won't be sorry.

Personally, I think a SAK is a good choice despite your qualms. I'd say pick up a Soldier and see how it fares for you. If you don't like it...well, I've been trying to trade for one to a while with no luck so far, and I have a Spyderco Dragonfly I'd part with for a Soldier...maybe with something extra thrown in.

Opinels are another good knife. More traditional looking, like older slipjoints, and they have a lock. The wood handles feel great, both in shape and texture. Plastic can't hold a candle to wood IMO.

Once you get used to the blades on these types of knives, you'll wonder why you ever used anything else.

Correct. Use a katana if you want, that's what makes you smarter and more civilized than people who want to rip stuff open with their teeth.

It is to laugh! Two weeks ago I watched someone cut up a cake with a Katana at an outdoor mural dedication. None of the artists, sponsors, painting, or any of the guests had anything to do with martial arts or Japanese culture. It was about out of place as a bagpipe at a bar mitzvah. Of course, a Vic Classic would have been too small.

Liberals like knives too. I personally think the "I like to carry knives that piss of liberals" tends to reinforce the impression that knife knut = mall ninja.

Get a cricket. Aside from the nice framelock and the badass slicing ... you want to impress the chicks, right? ;)

You and I both know that just because a knife is black and can be opened fast, doesn't mean that it's evil. But how are "liberals" ever going to be convinced of that if the only time they see them is in a bad guy's hand on TV?

I think that responsible use of the knife you like, regardless of what it looks like, is a fine thing for any of us to do. It will condition the "sheeple" in the manner that we all want... Knives are NOT evil, they're just tools...

I agree with that, completely, but I think if that's going to happen the way to do it is to to make a friendly introduction. I'm sure using a big bad black serrated giant tactical folder with guthook to cut open boxes gives a very satisfying feeling of persecuted righteousness, but it really doesn't help things, does it? Also, knife-lovers cross many segments; girls, boys, liberals, conservatives, people who like guns, people who hate guns ... same with sheeple ... and simply blaming negative reactions on "wimpy liberals" just reinforces negative stereotypes.

Anyway, not to redirect attention away from the topic at hand ... I still favor the Cricket but the Blue Minigrip isn't a bad choice either. It's a very normal knife shape if you prefer a more traditional handle, the blue is very sheeple friendly, and it's apparently an EDC favorite among women, so if you think you might want to convert your friends at some point ... :D
I personally don't like the fake spyderhole (but then I think your 1st choice of lime green is hideous :p ), and I think the VG-10 totally outclasses the 440C, but again, it's your choice.

I'm not sure how 'socially acceptable' the BM 707 is.

I pop open an auto whenever there is a package to be cut, like opening up a fruit basket at a party. Although I also have a nice slippie for opening stuff in certain mixed company, like out in public.

How about a Blade-Tech Mouse with S30V or an AG Russell Featherlite folder if you want a knife without a clip. THANK YOU! Kevin

How could I have forgot.... the PRETTIEST knife made by Kershaw, the RAINBOW LEEK!
Every time you open the sheep will flock around you as if you were the Messiah. It's so people friendly I once had a 87 year old at church ask me to "see it". She saw it on my belt and the PRETTY RAINBOW dazzled her!
Go figure. It's as fast as a switchblade,3" blade legal carry size in even the most unfriendly knife states. and just plain pretty to look at.
Cuts too!
Peace.

Thank you. I'm as liberal as it gets and I EDC a Benchmade 710... you can't get too much bigger than that and still be able to carry it in a pocket. And for some reason, it's never scared anyone.

If you (in the general sense) do carry a knife to piss us libs off... you need a better reason for carrying a knife... try actually using it for its intended purpose instead of bitching about how you have to carry two because of a few sheep here and there.

I think the idea of sheeple is a little skewed and blown out of proportion sometimes. Most people don't and won't care one way or the other as long as you're not screaming and foaming at the mouth when cutting a string with your 17 inch blade.

But like I said in my first post here... get the Cricket just because it's such a wonderful little knife. I'm getting addicted to them... gotta get me some more SS models so I can add exotic wood scales to them.

Ok, the thing at hand is not my friends, it's the general public I'm worried about. My friends have grown used to me carrying something, it's more surprising when I'm not.
The Rainbow Leek, I'm not even sure if I can pull that one off...
I'm leaning towards the Spin, then the 555 BLU, then the Cricket (I STILL can't figure out how not to kill the tip) Thanks. I'll get a SAK sooner or later, it's just that locks prevent accidents, especially when cutting something like a blisterpack

Two things. First, Wenger makes a number of their new Evo models standard size SAKs with locks. See: http://www.equipped.org/shot_show_2006_knives.htm#wenger So, if the lack of a lock is the only thing keeping you from getting an SAK, they have your solution.

Second, FWIW we sell a lot of my Mini-RSK Mk1s with Yellow handles to women and those working in an urban office environment. The yellow handle, low-key non-aggressive drop point blade shape and subdued stonewashed finish seems to do the trick. Brightly colored handles seem to diffuse a lot of concerns from sheeple. It doesn't have to make sense, it doesn't have to make me happy, but it is reality.

Hmm, sounds to me like you want a knife that a female will see as something other than a weapon. How about adding a 'gentleman's folder' to your carry for ceremonial use?
At the moment I'm using a Buck Koji folder. This has just replaced a Benchmite.
Greg

I've had the exact same problem with a Schade Sharpfinger, a Cold Steel Recon, and even a KaBar Law Enforcement model with a 2 inch blade. Don't sweat it. I've tried educating sheeple politely and I've found it to be a waste of time. Most cops will tell you that as long as it's not "concealed" (check your local regs) and you're not deliberately trying to scare people with it, you're OK. Worst case scenario is that they'll tell you to put it away, take it off your belt, put it in your saddlebags, etc.
