I need a new computer

the good thing about computer problems is that they're usually reproducible by the technician
try troubleshooting a leaky roof =.=

Or even worse, try fixing a fencing blade that ALWAYS fails on the strip, but ALWAYS works when tested by the armourers.

Update:

The problem was with the Antec power supply after all. Received a replacement yesterday and everything's back on track.

James, I'd be curious to hear what you decided.

I am planning to get a computer from a local place near me. I'm going to let them decide the specifics. It should happen by my birthday, the tenth. I'll let you all know what happens then.

You'll miss out on all the "fun" of building your own. But some folks have better things to do at 2am than trying to create an Intel Matrix RAID array... locate and load the Matrix RAID drivers... create and format partitions... install the operating system...

Today is the part that I enjoy most, installing and configuring the software for the hardware components.

Well, I finally got the computer, and am currently working out the hiccups. My current problem is this:

I can't get on my home network. I am using a Nvidia Nforce Networking Controller, and connecting to a Linksys BEFW11S4 router. I keep getting the "limited or no connectivity" message, and it does not work. I looked in the router settings, and I'm not getting into the DHCP table.

It works fine with other computers, like my laptop, which I am posting from right now. (It is using a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC)

I fear that it may be that my ethernet adaptor is too new, and that my aging router doesn't like it.

Anyone have any ideas? It will be a bit of a nuisance if I can't get on the internet.

Is my diagnosis completely wrong?

Probably.

After I get this working, I'll see if I can't get the usb controller to actually install correctly.

EDIT: Ok, it actually works now. I'm not complaining, but this is really kind of bizarre.

It sounds like your drivers aren't loading. I had the same problem and reinstalled the drivers from Nvidia and everything worked flawlessly.

Alright. The most pressing thing now is activating windows. I installed using a DELL OEM cd, because that's all we had lying around, but we don't have the CD key for it. We actually purchased an XP home CD a while ago, but have no idea where it is now. I have tried using various programs to extract the CD key from my other computer, where I installed the purchased version. However, when I try to activate windows using them, it says that they are either unauthorized, or invalid.

Could it be that installing using the DELL copy of windows makes my CD key from the other CD not work here?

Is there a solution to my problem, without finding the actual purchased CD case, or buying a new copy of windows XP?

I'd really like to avoid doing that.

If anyone has any ideas, they would be very appreciated.
