I would take a look at Precision Matthews, they're import machines but they pay for upgraded parts and quality control but they're still a reasonable price.

As always if you can get a used knee mill such as a bridgeport or equivelent go for that.

Instead of the HF min i mill, take a look at the US made Taig line.

A lot of good advice here. I would say if you can get a Bridgeport in your shop, that would be the best bet. I have a full size mill, small and high end drill presses and I also have a benchtop mini mill from little machine shops. If I had to have only one, I would select my big Jet (Bridgeport style) mill....but if I couldn't have a 1 ton machine, I would definitely select the mini mill. They are very useful and precise for knifemaking and I use that mini mill every time I am in the knife shop.
