I'm starting to care more about the knife's overall design vs over the top design. For whacking at stuff somewhat hard I just use a mora or other proper tool. For a cutting instrument.
I have only a couple of modern EDC's now that I love large 21, locking sodbuster, Kabar Dozier lockback, Alias 2 Auto. I have other very good EDC's lying around places but this is my current favorite's list and rotation.
I like these guys because they are all slim, pretty lightweight and easy to EDC. I think there's a lot of knives out there that are awesome but not for me. Too heavy, too wide or something else. The Starbenza doesn't get carried as it's blade is too big for where I live NJ, but the form and function of it are great to me as it's not gimmicky. I've traded out or sold a lot of knives that sucked me in with a "feature" only for me to get rid of it because I really like a certain type of knife and am restricted in some ways because I live in a suburb and work around NYC.
Al Mar's by many standards are outdated and they use a crappier steel, relative to what's out there but I'm almost certain in hand, they fall into that perfect category the way a Delica, or Blur feel in hand.
Lately I've been wanting to check out more Kizer's and Al Mar's. Even though I've sold off most of my Benchmades and I think they are overpriced, their form and function are really good for EDC. They make a ton of slender, compact knives whose blades aren't overbuilt.
