i need a new folder

Are you committed to thumb studs, assisted opening, or a recurve blade shape?

@BITEME recommended the Civivi Baklash. I'll agree on the excellent ergonomics. The deep-carry pocket clip is certainly an upgrade versus the Blur. At least the more recent versions, including the one with ebony wood handles, have recessed clip screws and that's a nice touch. The action is smooth. Civivi does a decent heat treatment on their 9Cr18Mov and the cutting geometry is great. That thinness behind the edge lets it glide through materials.

I have a used Benchmade 585, just back from factory sharpening its 154CM, solid lockup

Send your Blur back to Kershaw and explain the lock-up problem.
If there is a problem, I'm sure they will fix it.

That's absolutely true, but beware that Kershaw, ZT, KAI currently has a wait time of 2-3 months for repairs.

Cold Steel is a well made knife and usually a great value for the price. The American Lawman is a great edc. Also look at the Ultimate Hunter and the Code 4.

I've been secretly lusting after a bench made for awhile even though they have a pretty bad reputation lately

That has been blown way out of proportion. Overall Benchmade knives are good to go. I've had about the same amount of issues with my Benchmades as I have with Spyderco & ZT. Which is very little.
Actually I sold off all my ZT's and the only Sprderco I have left is a Salt Ladybug. Still have every Benchmade I ever bought.
If you want one, buy one and judge for yourself. I highly doubt you'll regret it.

Also I have to say, Kai/Kershaw has a great warranty policy.
Send in your Blur and more than likely they will either fix the lock issue or replace the knife.
Go on the website and you can print out the form and send it along. It's worth the cost of a Blur to do it.

Another vote for Cold Steel from me, bud. For under $100, you can’t go wrong with the Code 4, the Rajah 3, or the Voyager series. All these knives are lockback (Tri-Ad lock), just getting that out there in case you’re particular about the lock type. They’re a bit stiff to disengage, but these three knives are absolutely rock solid. The Recon 1 and AK-47 are a tad more expensive, but they’re dependable EDC knives as well.

Spyderco has some awesome knives as well under $100, like the Endura 4, Delica 4, and the Resilience. But IMHO, Spydies shine in the $100-$250 range. Cold Steel is the king of cost-effective dependable knives.

Whatever knife you pick up, let us know if you don’t mind. We’re always excited ‘bout new acquisitions! :)

I agree with NorthernSouthpaw. It's blown way out of proportion. I now have 10 benchmades, and aside from a few foibles that were easily fixable (sharpening), they've been great. I think I have one that's slightly off center, but more of my spydercos are off center. Almost all my ZTs needed the edges worked on out of the box. So yeah, benchmades good to go.

I'm the event you have a problem, they have excellent customer service. Get one, use it, enjoy it.

the blade has attempted to close on me while using the knife. essentially i lost trust in the lockup. im not sure if kershaw would fix it or not. i guess it doesnt hurt to ask but im a bit pessimistic when it comes to matters like this

In my experience kershaws customer service is unrivaled. I had a kershaw freefall, and striped the screw for the pocket clip. I talked to kershaw and they sent me a new one. I broke the assisted opening on the new one. They didn't even have me send it in and offered me an upgrade to the kershaw link, I broke the clip and I bought a new one because I felt I had gotten my money out of the knife. I would definitely try them first.

If you are looking for a really good sub 100.00 knife try the cold steel broken skull or the recon. Fantastic knives for the price.

I would also recommend the spyderco Endura.

what are your thoughts on the benchmade north fork series? and should i get the wood laminate or g10 scales?

Overall design it's essentially the mini version of a Grizzly Creek (or Grizzly Ridge). I would go with the G10 version. It just looks nicer and that laminate wood seems a bit tacky to me.

I second a Kershaw Knockout if you decide to stick with Kershaw. Not to knock the Blur, but I’ve felt the Knockout was an improved Blur.
