So, I have an idea for a pocket tool. It's a pretty straight forward design, made from one piece of steel. Small keychain tool. Now since I have no idea how to do steel work, what's the best place to get a prototype of it made? And what is the usual costs for something like this?

The best is probably a local machine shop. Look in your phone book. It will run around $100 an hour, so the total cost will depend on how complex the part is.

There are some folks on this board who work a good deal with CNC machining, etc. Not to speak for him, but Nathan Carothers comes to mind (aka Nathan the Machinest). Maybe he'll see this thread and drop in if he has an interest. Also, guys like David at Great Lakes Waterjet might be able to set up and cut the part for you, but finishing will have to be done elsewhere.

I am always interested in new ideas, send me an email or PM with what you need and maybe I can make one.

I would be glad to take a look at it for you. Is there something you could email?

Something like these?

Since it's already in his area of interest, maybe he would make it for you, or perhaps he already sells something suitable.

or

If it is something like that it's pretty simple, go to a machine shop supplier, buy an 18" piece of tool steel
(A-2 or O-1) and a file...some abrasive cloth..and have a go at it.

For $25 or less, you can have something inyour hand to see if your idea is going to work out.
(and of course you could do the same with a wooden model first (free paint stir-sticks)

Atwood doesn't take orders for his tools, let alone custom orders, FYI. I'd get in touch with some of the people here who have volunteered.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everybody. I'll evaluate what I want to do next. If I do, I might contact some of you in this thread. Thanks.

I got into this game through keychain tools - they're VERY fun to make, fairly low stress, and very rewarding. If you are doing it for fun, try picking up a 1x30" sander from Harbor Freight. I made my first one out of mild steel, still have it right here.

Uhm, that is, unless you don't need a new, expensive addiction.
