I'd think about a machete or a machete in sword's clothing if you're going to just smack it around. I'm not judging at all. I keep a 22" Tram machete just for "yard work". Some might say that a 22" blade is a bit overkill for pruning back a Rose of Sharon, but it IS a lot of fun

It's my knock around blade, and it's a happy day when I get to clear the drainage ditch out at work with it.
All of my other "real" swords are not delicate or balanced. They are made by Himalayan Imports, and the kamis making them are more interested in a strong stout blade rather than a balanced slicer. My Everest Katana is about as far from a traditional katana as you can get, but it's pretty much unbreakable under normal use. Even my "slight" Manjushree is really overbuilt. It's kind of like a long gladius with a cross guard.
That said, my bump in the night sword is a 3+lb Falcata. There is nothing subtle about this blade. You're basically going to hack and slash with it. You COULD thrust, but it's not going to be as effective. It's got the traditional umbrella grip, so you aren't going to be choking up on it like a baseball bat. In short, it's a heavy one handed sword that would put a hurting on anything that got in front of it...just make sure to hit the gym if you plan on swinging it much. It's a handful.
I've told myself that a really nice scimitar would be fun to have or maybe a celtic sword to cross over the falcata and hang above the fireplace since the Iberians were celtic too.
