I need a truck knife

I have a tool bag in my Ranger's space cab directly behind my seat. In the exterior pockets of the tool bag I keep an LM Supertool, SE Spydie Endura and a PE CRKT Prowler. I feel pretty confident that this line-up can meet about 99% of the cutting needs I may encounter. ;)

Man! These suggestions are all great! I particularly like Cougar's and Alberta Ed's suggestions. You cannot beat a good quality, cheap knife for doing the grunge work you don't want to put a higher dollar knife thru. Then you can pick a nicer "truck knife" for showing off to your buds! :D

The Ontario Army Quartermaster can be had for around 45 bucks. If you're looking for a tough, inexpensive carbon steel fixed blade, Ontario's Spec Plus line is always worth a look. Nothing fancy and the fit and finish pretty much sucks, but for hard work, they're reasonably good and durable.

I have Beckers in both of my vehicles. The car that gets used for longer trips has a BK9 Combat Bowie in its emergency kit and the local car a BK10 Crewman. They are incredibly tough, versatile, and reasonably priced.

You cant put a cheap knife in a HUMMER!!! Pick a good knife, I like the fixed blade idea.

I don't see any reason to buy a folder. I like a blade ~4-4.5" better than anything else for a "heavy utility" knife.
Owen,

You are spot on, my friend. I was subtly tricking myself into precisely the trap you mention: "Heck, this is a nice knife...I'll take it with me today." And end up with the blade in my drawer (or pocket, or desktop, or ...) instead of in my truck. A fixed blade will not tempt me so.

Thank you for catching me...RIGHT at the line!

Invaluable advice...which is why I post my questions here.

10Q,
Tom.

Actually, this (among dozens of other posts) has convinced me. I've spent hours looking at various webpages...Becker/Swamp Rat/Ka-Bar...and it seems that the Becker Crewman is just an incredible bang for the buck. I'd overlooked fixed blade knives before -- but never again!

I confess that I spent another hour dithering over the Desert Tan variant (my Hummmer is "Desert Tan" from the original 1990's Iraqi offensive), but decided that simple black is good enough...a greasy hand or two is enough to convert Tan to Black anyway.

And now I'm thinking about what I really need in the trunk of my wife's Honda Civic! A multitool, for sure...but what blade? C'mon guys...give me a hand here!

TIA,
Tom.

I think you have the same diesel in there that is in my 1995 Suburban. How is it holding up? Mine has been trouble free after some initial warrenty work. I love diesel motors, beats the heck out of gas. I get 22 miles to the gallon in a full size truck and with a 40 gallon tank I can run forever (on anything from soy beans to used fast food oil). I'll never get rid of it. I'm waiting for GM to put the diesel back in the suburban, or maybe i'll just buy a Hummer motor and a new Suburban. ;) Actually, at 70,000 miles the truck feels like it is just starting to break in, really have no reason to get rid of this one.

As to the fixed blade i'm thinking a fixed blade knife (look at the legalities of your state and see if you can carry something between 5-8 inches) My initial thought would be something with a partially serrated edge, since you never really have to care for the serrations and they will still cut through belts, rubber, plastic, ect. I wouldn't get a real huge knife as the bigger it is the tougher it will be if you need to cut something in a tight spot.

Beelzebubba: Chill out. You don't like SUV's, that's cool. But for all you know, Bali fly lives in some remote area of Australia that has no roads. You seem awefully worried about our children, and that's cool. But if you don't lighten up a bit, you're going to kill yourself!
Back On Topic:
Get a Spyderco Police 50/50. This is one of the few folders that I think is large enough to accomodate a combo edge. There's no dissing VG-10, either. If you are looking for a folder, I'm saying this is where the money is.

I'm going to split off the off-topic trolling and move it to the Political Arena. Please keep in mind: we do have a place for that at this website, but this ain't it.

If you decide that you are interested in a Camp Tramp, let me know. I have one I would likely be willing to part with. I would imagine that it would be a bit tougher than the Becker although I have never held a Becker...

Cold Steel Bushman ~$15. Even if you get another truck knife get a Bushman too -- for the jobs you don't want to use even your truck knife for.

I agree wholeheartedly!

I concur. An absolutely brilliant point...and one that I've already acted upon. A Bushman is on its way to me, even as I type...along with a Becker Companion.

I'm a happy camper...and I really appreciate all and everyone's input. BladeForums rules!

Thanks much, one and all.
Tom.

My Bushman is going from my camping/yardwork gear to the back of my truck, and I'll just order another one, maybe a mini Bushman for my truck and leave the Bushman in my yardwork gear, or maybe buy two bushman for...

I have a Glock field knife mounted behind the seat of my giant Ford diesel, but I also have a Stanley SportUtility knife in a bag behind the seat. This is a combo 3-1/2" folder with a retractable utility blade built into the end of the handle. Comes in a nylon sheath with 10 extra blades. Around $20 at Menards, Home Depot, etc. Carry one on my ATV too. A lot of utility for a small investment.
