I need another large tactical style folder-help please!

I had a 2X Cold Steel folder with a 6-inch blade. It rolled badly from just chopping small branches hanging across the trail. Later, the rolled area, about the size of half a penny, broke out completely.

Get a Rukus or a Manix or the Ontario Retribution if you need something large. They are only slightly over your budget but worth saving for.

Just ordered a Rukus. Should be here by the weekend if I'm lucky. Thanks for everyone's help. Can't wait!

Did ya get the full size or the smaller one, which is not really small at all.
Either one is a really nice knife, you will definitely like it.

I currently have a buck stryder, cold steel recon 1 tanto, and a crtk m16sf. I like to carry big knives and have been looking around for ideas but am having trouble. ... I have plenty of liner locks and would like to have something like the [Spyderco] Captain with a slide lock.
I like big knives, too, Sniper, and I have a Cold Steel Recon 1 and a CRKT M16-14SF, as well. You didn't say which Recon 1 you had, but the one with G10 handles is clearly the best. As sturdy and as well made as the old Recon 1 was, I still like to have a bit more hold on my knives (like the SF), even if the handles are like sand paper. Moving on to your question, how do you like the CS AK-47? It's fat like the Captain, has the side lock and isn't nearly as ugly, although I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Also, how do you like the CS Vaquero? It's certainly one of the most intimidating knives on the market and I'm glad someone make a large folder like that.

Like you, I prefer firearms. When I came to this forum, I had to get used to the idea that some people are willing to pay as much for a small knife as they do a top-quality stainless revolver with adjustable sights. Still, people are varied in their tastes. That's why making recommendations can be difficult.

Got the full sized rukus. I still can't believe how much some of these custom and not so custom knives are. I love knives and loved them before I could buy guns, but now every dime I have goes toward gun stuff. If I have $100, 200, 300, ++ I look for mags, scopes, cheap auto pistols, something to add to the gun collection. Knives are awesome, but still haven't figured out how to spend more than $100 for one except for today when I dropped $177 on the Rukus. That's the most I've ever spent on one knife. My first and only benchmade is a 10+ year old Mel Pardue folder with liner lock that I paid $65ish for. I kept it in my safe for years cause "it was worth so much". Ha, just dropped over twice that for my new rukus and plan to use it everyday. Of course using a knife for me doesn't include much of anything besides keeping it in my pocket 24/7 and occasionally using it to open the ups boxes full of gun accessories!!!! Ha!
Thanks for everyone's help. I figured most would skip this thread considering I didn't want to pay more than $400 for a custom. I was wrong.

Whoa, that's not good.

Can you tell us more about it? Was it the old AUS8 model or the new VG-1? How long had you had the knife and where did the rolling occur? Did you send the knife back to CS or take any photos?

Confederate:

It was a few years ago. I think it was the first post I made on this forum and I didn't get any answer. It was Aus8. It's a big knife with a long handle, so it made a good chopper. But the steel rolled pretty bad when I chopped a small branch. I might have hit a knot and twisted it. My question for the forum was how could I fix this roll. When no one answered, I tapped it straight with a hammer. But after a little more use, a big chunk just fell out. I didn't contact Cold Steel, but the experience was a gift because my eyes were opened to the world of knife steels.

And because of that experience, I've been leery of big folders because it is so easy to lever a lot of force on them. I was also leery of S30V because I had chipping problems with an early Manix and two early RSKs. (Aeromedix was nice enough to send me a replacement, but the designer more or less called me a liar, so I sent the chipping replacement to Cliff, back in that day so I'd have a witness, and the chipping was so bad he could not even keep it sharp.) So with the Rukus one day I just wailed on it to see if it would hold together, if I could count on it in a pinch and if the steel would hold up. The knife was awesome. The steel was awesome.

I see people on the forum buying cheap knives because they are cheap. I don't get it. For quality, durability and value in big folders, the Rukus and Manix are in the sweetspot.
