Confederate:
It was a few years ago. I think it was the first post I made on this forum and I didn't get any answer. It was Aus8. It's a big knife with a long handle, so it made a good chopper. But the steel rolled pretty bad when I chopped a small branch. I might have hit a knot and twisted it. My question for the forum was how could I fix this roll. When no one answered, I tapped it straight with a hammer. But after a little more use, a big chunk just fell out. I didn't contact Cold Steel, but the experience was a gift because my eyes were opened to the world of knife steels.
And because of that experience, I've been leery of big folders because it is so easy to lever a lot of force on them. I was also leery of S30V because I had chipping problems with an early Manix and two early RSKs. (Aeromedix was nice enough to send me a replacement, but the designer more or less called me a liar, so I sent the chipping replacement to Cliff, back in that day so I'd have a witness, and the chipping was so bad he could not even keep it sharp.) So with the Rukus one day I just wailed on it to see if it would hold together, if I could count on it in a pinch and if the steel would hold up. The knife was awesome. The steel was awesome.
I see people on the forum buying cheap knives because they are cheap. I don't get it. For quality, durability and value in big folders, the Rukus and Manix are in the sweetspot.
