I need help finding a self-defense pocket-knife

Pepper spray sounds good but what about using one of those Asp batons, (assuming of course they are legal where you are).
The Don Rearic article i listed on the first page of this thread is a good read. A Swiss multitool as a last ditch defensive device, either with tools closed or certain tools open.
Of course your brain is the best tool you have for avoiding trouble in the first place, be aware of your surroundings and avoid trouble spots.
Most campuses have lots of video/security cameras these days but its never really complete coverage. And those who are up to no good seem to always know the blind spots where they can act unseen. And if despite your caution trouble becomes unavoidable your feet are your second best tool. It may not be macho but sometimes running away is the best defense. lol!
So stay in shape!

I'll be entering college this fall, and since I won't be allowed to carry a gun (only 18, no ccdw, and student code), I'll have to settle for lesser protection.

Is there any type of pocket knife that offers reasonable defense against an assailant?

Price isn't much of an issue, as I'm willing to spend up to around $100, if the greater price offers better protection. I'm a complete newbie to knives in general, so any help is appreciated.

This one is really close to making my TOP 10.

In general, for a man on a college campus, there is a pretty slim chance of being raped/ muged (unless your extremley pretty,) so you will be pretty safe. But, then theres the ol' "school shooter" card, which usually hapens about once or twice a year, so it might be worth shanking up just for that scenario, your choice.

For some one with little training or experience, the Endura or Delica Wave are very easy to open, and are actually useful for practicall utility. There also legal most everywhere.

For pure SD, the cold steel safemaker I and II, or even the urban pal, are about as idiot proof it gets. You just throw a punch, and sudenly you have a horrific stab wound (provided it lands!) For taking out some gun wielding EMO kid, you would be hard pressed to do better. Also, because of the T handle profile, the knife is extremley hard to disarm, and is very comfortable to cary inside the waist band. Of course, it wold be iresponsible of me not to mention that these type of knives, known as a "push dagger" are about as illegal as it gets, everywhere, and would lead to your expulsion/ arrest if you were caught carrying them.

without getting into all the issues, if i had to recommend one knife to a college student that was cheap, reliable, and with SD application; i'd recommend the one with a bottle opener attached.

If it's only for SD and you won't need it for doing nice, clean cuts, then it's hard to beat the Spyderco Military with the FULLY serrated blade.

I've studied edged weapons techniques for many years and unless one is very skilled in a stabbing style like Pikal, then chances are during the very stressful situation where your life is at risk, you want all the "edge" (no pun intended) you can get and that includes being able to slice through your opponent's denim jacket or leather gloves. The serrated Military can do this. Also, it's size is about a large as one can carry in a pocket and the handle style provides a "locktight" grip.

Obviouly, be very aware of deadly weapon use laws and do everything in your power to prevent or get away for any situation where life and death self defense is needed. If you happen to survive and are even in the "right", there is still a high probability that you will spend time behind bars.

My bottom ten (which I think is the equivalent of JGarth's top ten).

Knarf,..
I think we both have the same perception of this kid.
Best bet for him is stay at home with mommy & daddy ...and commute to school ... but I'll bet his dad wants him out of the house ....

ok since you asked an honest question ill ask one. Do you have any military or martial training??? if not get some.

in answer to your question, Best knife for this is hands down an emerson Karambit, combat version, carried one of these for a long time and it is the best knife ive carried. it has more utility uses than youd guess from the blade shape. its alittle more expensive but its just great. its got a small blade so its legal most places.

dont let anyone make fun of you on this forum, if you want to carry a knife for SD then go for it.

that being said, anything is a weapon, ive seen people get stabbed with pens and forks and other benign objects and guess what they did a pretty effective job of hurting the people that got stuck with them.

for the short time i was in college before i enlisted i carried a benchmade 42 and never got hassled over it because i never whipped it out.
