School (ClemsonU) Says:

No student shall possess or use firearms, explosive devices, or weapons of any kind. Such weapons may include, but are not limited to, guns, BB guns, air pistols, rifles, knives with at least a 2 1/2-inch blade, martial art devices, and bows.

I am used to carrying Benchmade and Emerson. My current favorite and constant carry is my Emerson Mini-CQC-7B Combo w/satin finish and black G10. I need to switch to something that is legal to carry on campus.

Can any of you think of a knife along the lines of an Emerson/Benchmade/Other custom that I would like that has only a 2 1/2 inch blade?

It says "but not limited to", so even if you have an under 2.5 blade it still could be a problem.

Benchmite ? Small, good steel, cheap, unique locking mechanism, and does not look menacing.

Easy solution to the problem.......Buy a Cuda MAXX 5.5 and move up the road to BLUE HEAVEN! Of course that would be UNC I'm talking about!!:D

Actually though if you don't want to do that then you might want to look at the BM 310 Benchmite. It has a blade length of 1.92".

BTW, have them Tigers take it easy on the 'Heels for football, and we'll take it easy on ya'll in B-ball!!

Seroiusly though I've read some good things about the 310.

I figure it written with "but not limited to" just like the state/federal law for deadly weapon is written. It is left open to use as needed. I could easily kill someone with a calculus book. I don't think they will bother me as long as I am under 2.5

I will look into the 310

How about a Spyderco Dodo? It has a full-sized handle, but the blade is only 2 & 1/16 inches.

Al Mar also makes a nice little folder with about a 2 inch blade...(The S.L.B. or something like that.).

The 310 is in the running. I like a tanto blade and partial serrations but I don't know if that is avaiable in that small a package. I am not too fond of spyderco designs

The most solid <2.5" blade folder I can think of is the Spyderco Titanium Salsa. A lot of knife in a small package.

Edit -

Sorry, saw that you didn't care for Spydercos...

I would agree with the others about the 310 as well, nice little knife.

It is not necessarily 'illegal' to carry a larger knife on your campus, just 'against the rules'.

Does your school have actual POLICE with powers of arrest or basic Security Guards?

Police could actually subject you to a search if they saw a knife clipped to your pocket that they thought was a 'danger', but a Security guard would not have that right.

What I'm saying is:

you can probably get away with a larger knife in your pocket and a small Swiss Army Knife which you would actually use for Utility stuff if others are around.

Just some thoughts,

-John

I guess I should have added that My solution to a similar problem is:

Benchmade 806D2 AFCK (For Self Defense)
Victorinox Tinker (For general Utility)
Benchmade Mini-Griptilian (don't actually have this one yet, but it makes for a good one-hand utility. sort of in between my two other knives)

I also have my SwissTool X and a Leatherman Squirt P4.

I don't mean to turn this into another "Hey check our MY EDC!!!" thread (though I do love those), I just thought it would be worthwhile to share my way of dealing with a similar situation.

Good Luck,

-John

Before you know it, they'll be mashing all the cafeteria food into paste so you can eat without the use of any dangerous utensils on college grounds. You should carry your regular EDC and also carry something tiny for use around sheeple and campus cops as blastjv suggested.

What blastjv said.

I went to a fellow ACC school (Ga. Tech) and carried a 4" blade folder the entire 4 years I attended, despite the rules. If you are discreet, nobody should care. It helps that you are in a relatively knife-friendly part of the country, too.

How about a Kershaw Double Cross? (2 3/8” blade, one hand opening, looks innocuous, no clip for anyone to notice).

The recently discontinued Spyderco Native is also a great knife.

Lots of choices, but your best choice for a small blade is probably a Spyderco. That's where Spyderco really shines, small knives, fantastic ergonomics.

You want a short blade that is as tough as a long blade and you want a handle that is long enough to be secure. For toughness I would look at non-stainless blades. One that comes to mind is the Cold Steel Medium Trail Guide with drop point blade. The blade is 2-5/8 inches long and made out of Carbon-V alloy. It is designed with a broad utility shaped blade rather than looking tactical. It would be easy to grind off 1/8 inch of length to fall into the limits. This would take a real razor edge and be very usefull. The list price is under $30.00.

You want a knife you can do everything with, including defend yourself, but you don't want people looking at you like you're a maniac. Unfortunately, most people just don't share our affinity for mean ass tactical knives!

Seriously, from what I've observed, as long as it has anodized alumninum handles in pretty colors, you can get away with pretty much anything. I'm currently carrying a ka-bar dozier Thorn (almite), which I LOVE, but it is pushing it for PC...despite the small size it still looks a little mean. I'm considering going to a Spyderco Lum Chinese folder or a Microtech mini-socom with a colored handle. I used to have a Microtech UDT with an anodized blue handle that even girls said was "cute," despite the fact it was automatic! I really regret losing it kayaking :( From what I can tell, if it's black handled with a silver or black blade, and it's not frigging tiny, people are going to look at it as a killing knife. People are even going to look at a delica that way. But a purple handled mini socom is cute. Go figure!

You have hit the subject dead on. I am in my 4th year here. I still have about a 1 1/2 to go (don't ask why). I have been carrying a benchmade mini-stryer w/a black tanto blade. I just got my Emerson Mini-CQC, this time I choose to go with a satin finish so it doesn't look as scary but do to the contrast of the blade/handle colors it looks bigger. I like having it clipped to my right pocket. I just wish ppl would understand.

I could always carry my black powdercoated CRKT kiss knife w/24kt gold accent. That can't be scary.

We do have real police. You can run from the ppl with white shirts but never run from the people in black shirts.
