I need help selecting a PC knife.

What about a kerambit, lots of those have sub 2.5 blades, and they are used as box openers.

You don't say why you need this knife, if it is for self defence, then you might consider a stinger, a perin tactical wallet, a cane. Or one of those hooks you can use like a kerambit, minus the puncture aspect, or a Guntin dull blade, which presumably isn't a knife.

Szabo has some cool small knives.

If your intention is self-defence, then I don't see any of this would escape the martial arts component of the test. Except if you could manyfacture the need for a cane. However if you don't violate their definitions, and they haven't powers of search/arrest, then you aren't terribly liekly to have to explain it, or fall in too deep a hole if you have to. For instance a lot of these Kerambit like devices are a little off the beaten path, though not for long.

If you need for a knife is practical, then we need to know in what respect, what is the tool use in question.

Does your school have actual POLICE with powers of arrest or basic Security Guards?

I went to a North Carolina university myself, many years ago. That one had campus police who were regular police, although a separate department headquarted on the campus, and not connected with the city police department. I would expect UNC has the same set-up.

I'm struggling with the same issue myself. I attend a local community college with plans to transfer the the local university in a year to a year-and-half and I'm concerned about the university police. I've ben looking at Queen slipjoints, Lone Wolf Knives City knife, the Mouse by Blade-Tech and the Benchmade 310 Benchmite. I'd love to get some more inputs. I looked at the Spyderco Dodo a few days ago and I was less than impressed. It is a rather large handle for such a small blade.

My campus passed a weapons ban a couple of weeks ago, but the wording doesn't mention pocketknives, just "bowie knives, dirks or daggers, or knives with a mechanical contrivance in the handle that releases the blade automatically". That was from memory, so don't quote me. I carry my small Sebenza every day, lanyard hanging out and all, and I don't expect to get hassled for it. I think it's mostly in the way that your present yourself. If you're a punk or metalhead or something, the cops are gonna look at you closer than if you're just an average-looking kid who blends in pretty well (like me). Don't give them a reason to stop you, and you probably won't get hassled.

I think you have already been given several good options including the smaller Spydies and Benchmades so I'll leave that alone. I just wanted to tell you that you may want to head North on I-85 to Business I-85 to Odom Ace Hardware, 1089 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg,S.C. They have an awesome selection of Spydies and Benchmades as well as some other knives. You can certainly find the kind of knife for which you are looking.

The Al Mar cigar cutter "Havana". Functional, with small blade and vey inocuous or a Spyderco Toad perhaps.

I've since graduated but I carried always carried a folder around 3in and sometimes up to 4in at night and I never recieved a bit of trouble about it. Then again, I never really got into much (er...too much) trouble.

Sorry I didn't clarify the use. It gets used for everything, just like your daily carry. Also, like yours, I do intend to use it for self-defense if I am faced with the threat of serious bodily harm. It is the best option I have.

I should get my CWP in ~60 days but state law doesn't allow me to carry here. Even if I could, I wouldn't carry here except going to the parking lot late at night. I don't worry about mugging on the way to the library. Late at night now it is my Surefire G2 and my CQC I rely on.

Excuse my previous post and comments about UNC. I was thrown off by Artsig1's mention of UNC, and forgot you said you are at Clemson.

Alot of people say the Emerson LaGriffe is the best small knife for self-defense. Well, probably the custom Perrin LaGriffe is the best, but the Emerson version would hold the honors in a factory knife. Not sure how it would compare to the others mentioned for utility, though.

A problem with the Emerson is finding one. I have tried ordering a LaGriffe from a couple of internet dealers recently. Neither would accept the order, citing big problems in getting knives from Emerson.

I never worried about the restriction and often carried a 21" long Bowie knife in my backpack on campus. I carried regular sized folders and no one ever gave me any guff about them. Like the other guys mentioned, the prettier or cuter it looks, the better. Don't think of that in a bad way! Here is the perfect excuse to get a decent knife and have it engraved! Upgrade with beautiful mother of pearl handles! Maybe ivory handles with some attractive scrimshaw.

If you're worried about getting caught, just carry a 4 D-cell maglite for defense and forget the knife. I make miniatures, and often think that a mini Sheffield Bowie would be kinda neat for this purpose. Granted, it wouldn't be all that user friendly, but it would still have a very high "neat" factor to keep sheeple at bay, while at the same time you get the satisfaction of carrying a Bowie.

I will look into the 310

I know what you mean -- it nearly killed me for sure.

For some reason i find that hard to believe.

Find out what the College Police's opinion is on pepper spray, some encourage students to carry it (esp the girls). Pepper spray can be a much better SD option at college, since there are basically two general types of situations at school.

1) A someone comes after you with a weapon, often non student, where you could potentially use leathal force.

2) Some drunken jerk is trying to start a fight with you or your friends, he may want to hit you, and hurt you, but you probably wont feel comfortable trying to kill him with your knife. (Been there, i certainly wasnt ready to stab him over the situation, i had a Socom E on me that i didnt do anything with, but i would have sprayed him). Pepper spray could be better since you might be more willing to use it, i know i would be.

i would make the knife choice based on utility, probably a Spyderco Ti Salsa, but if i did want a close in SD option i would check out the Dodo. i would also carry cheaper knives incase you do end up losing one.

This knife might not be exactly up your alley but check out the puma 4 star mop. The blade is exactly 2", the lockup is solid, they come sharp as hell, the scales are really attactive, and they're cheap. 25.50+shipping. I bought a few of them to give as gifts and wound up keeping one for myself. Makes a good 'going to church' knife.

Sog flash 1 has a clip that completely conceals the knife. You can even put it in your shirt pocket and it looks like a pen. Measurements are right to for what you said.
