So, I'm in the process of making a large-ish saex. It's aldo's 1084, 1/4 x 2" about 11" OAL. Yes, I know, its both too thick and too large for a rookie like me to be attempting. But I have the steel, and I'm too broke to buy more. The only currency I have is time, so I'm plunging on headlong into a project that is likely too big.
Anyway I plan on doing a full flat grind and to give it a distal taper to reduce some of that front end weight. So here's where I need advice.
Should I try to establish the ffg or the distal taper first? Also I haven't clipped the front yet to give it that oh so saex-y look. Here's what I plan to do... Leave the clip until after I get the distal done, clip it then establish the ffg.
What do you think? Oh by the way, um only using files and such, if that makes a difference to how you would approach it.
Thanks for the advice in advance!

Distal first, then FFG.

Before doing either, mark the edge and spine for a centerline.

BTW, putting a Viagra in the quench oil will help with making your seax better :)

Thanks Stacey! I imagine the viagra helps the quench oil's viscousity, enabling a harder blade, eh?
