I need Help!!

Steven, I made a quick little video for you. Couldn't say anything since I was doing it undercover so to speak :D
I'll just do a little explaining here. First, before you do anything make sure your holes are lined up. When you have the knife snapped together, pivot the springs away and slide a pin through the center holes in all three scales, it should go through quite easily without getting hung up. If all goes well, you should be able to get the knife together no problem. Make sure your pin has a nicely tapered point, and make the point long, not stubby. this will help it to center itself. In the video, I have a piece of leather attached to the vise to protect the front edge of the knife. The strip you see in my hand is another thick piece of leather that is cut no wider than the width of the two springs in the knife. This way it'll fit against the springs without pressing against the two outside covers. If it were wider you'd risk cracking the covers. With the leather sandwiched against the springs, I just squeeze it in the vise, you'll see the springs compress, and the center hole should become aligned with the spring holes. I use a hardened steel pin, pressing it into the hole while I turn the vise until it slides through, but you can do the same with you pin. You shouldn't have to really hammer the pin through, it should go through with just a few taps.

Please help, what is the best way to cap the ends of the pins?
Do you have a procedure on this and what equipment / tools do you use?

Thank You all, for all your help!!

Steven you'd need a spinner for that, it's a specialized bit that spins a head on the pin while simultaneously pressing the hafts together. You can do it carefully on a drill press one side at a time. I think the bits are available through Jantz or USA Knife or one of the other supply houses. You'd need two bits and a piece of metal to mount one of them in. This would be your rest while you're spinning the other side. If this seems daunting to you and you don't mind covering shipping, I'd be happy to spin them for you, just PM me.

Great job on the assembly!

wow, just what i been looking for....
i have not read it all,but i need to know how to get them apart?....i also would like to know
if there are any back springs available for these trappers?....also,are the swinden ??pins available?...
i still got to take mine apart to figure the problem...it's the 2 blade uh trapper in stagalon....the blades are loose, they wooble like someone else tried
to take it apart before....b;lades look almost new, nice knife, just loose....i wanted to turn into a single blade trapper....
jd

ok,i figured how to dissassemble...remove center pin first....
but if i wanted to build a single blade,is there anyway possible of doing this?...
am i gonna have to drill holes in bolsters and use pins to make it a single blade?...
i hadn't read the whole post, and appoligize if my answer is above.....
im just in the middle and wanted to know if im beating my self up?...
if answer is above, just excuse my impatience.....i'll see it soon...back to my fun....

JD, making a UH trapper into a single blade knife requires a bit of work. First you have to disassemble the knife, then cut the head of the blade pin off so that you can separate the blades. You'd then have to drill the bolsters and reassemble with standard pins. That's a fairly large pin, I think it may be a .101 or .125. Could be .093 too but I'm pretty certain it's larger than that.

ok,i watched erics video......the knife has the swinden pins i guess you call them....
i changed covers for a set of maroon sawcuts....they snapped right on,but when i go
to put center pin,it just won't go thru....i tried several times,ways,etc.....
think i may have too big of pin?...it goes thru first liner, then i get all aggrevated.....
i have an awful temper,not because i want to...just something i inherited i guess....
but couple times i started to just toss it.....i already messed up edge of handle liner
a little...i hope i can sand it out...
aggrevated,but not giving up,

yeah, that's what i figured eric....i had another uh trapper looked the same, but it
had standard pins.....i made single from it....
does that sound normal for some to have standard pins, others to have swindens?
jd

JD, it depends on where they were made, Camillus made a bunch with standard pins, most of the ones made at Schrade and Imperial were Swinden pinned (new construction). The center pin is most likely .082-.085.
