Hi Friends,

Any of you good folks want to help me design a logo? If I put ideas up here would you fine folks be willing to make suggestions to help me get something together? I'm feeling the urge to get something worked out for several reasons. Two of which are: Josh Kehn is going to morph my old farm site (now at www.eartharts.us) to bring me more up to date on the web with my art work and teaching; I've recently been accepted into the Pacific Handcrafters Guild.

If any of you would be willing to kick this around with me here, I will post some inspirational (to me) sketches and thoughts that might help get the ball rolling.

Thanks so much, Phil

What do you want to incorperate into you logo ?
IIRC You liked JT's anvil with crossed tongs and sword.
You want a Hawiian component? What is the/a symble of
The Islands?

Phil,
I'm a Graphic Designer. If there's anything I can help you out with, drop me a line at threeravensringo@gmail.com. That way I'm likely to answer it.

I could use something a little creative to liven up my life.

Best,
Jim

How about doing several designs and then do a poll to see what everyone likes.:)

:) kinda kidding

Wow, thanks for your ideas and offers already guys. I guess I better get hopping. Soooo, here are some design parameters and concept ideas...

  • Needs to say, yup you guessed: earth and art. What symbols do that?
  • Earth arts = metal smithing, knife making, wood working, leather crafting, stone carving, farming, hunting, etc, etc...
  • Doesn't need to say Hawaii, as we may move to the mainland in a few years.
  • JT's tattoo (see below) I really like this. Almost wish I could steel it.
  • Earth on (or floating over?) palm of hand
  • plow share and sword
  • Something that could be simplified to be made small for stamping work
  • Biodynamics Hawaii (I've always like this one we did of a taro plant between the sun and moon. See below.)
I've got to run right now. More later. Love you guys! --Phil

My idea might be a bit busy to go on a knife.
I was picturing you wearing bib overalls holding a pitchfork standing next to a marijuana plant. Isn't that what the farmers grow in Hawaii?
Maybe a machete instead of the pitchfork?

Coming up with a good logo can take time. I spent over five years coming up with my tattoo. And longer then that thinking about how bad I wanted one that was knife related. But ya take your time and let the ideas mature and evolve into a true work of art that you will be happy with.

Phil,

You have mail.

Hi Phil. I'm not sure how to say this because I don't want to offend you in any way at all. But the picture looks like a girls legs wearing a thong and the earth on top of her butt. It was the first thing that popped in my head. I am sorry and I am not trying to make ANY jokes in this thread. Just thought I would tell you. I am sure these guys can hook you up. There pro's it's what they do. John

Just my two cents worth, Phil:

A knife logo should be simple and not a statement of purpose. A pineapple, a crescent moon,a hammer, a leaf, etc. is more than enough artwork. That plus a name and a location should be plenty. So I would suggest -
PHIL DWYER (in an arch)
over a pineapple ( or other simple symbol)
with HAWAII below it ( Or PACIFIC ARTS GUILD).

If you want a big fancy logo to put on letter heads and certificates or tattoo on your arm, by all means draw the Mona Lisa, but in 100 sq. millimeters of a knife ricasso, you don't need (or want) much more than the basics.

Stacy

On a separate note, how did that casting project come out?

BAMM !

Beat me to it.

All the best makers let their knife style be their logo.

I find that I can recognize many makers from a distance by the stylistic design of the blade before I can read the stamp...
I do know that Don Hanson has that little sunfish...but that only happened after viewing hundreds of his photos. I always think of Don Hanson first, not Sunfish Forge by Don Hanson..

Make sure that I can read your name and type it into google with no funny characters or backwards letters or such stuff..

Your name, and perhaps - Maker, or handmade...or something just to clue in some folks who would not otherwise recognize that.

I'm never going to look for your knives under "Biodynamics Hawaii"...hell I only spelled it right here because I copy-pasted it..

One of the Brownells Gunsmithing Kinks books covers this: Use your name That's who they will think of anyway..Phil that Knifemaker guy...make it easy for them to find you. Pictures of pineapples...only if that's your name...

Ken Onion uses the heck outta his Onion - name for marketing his designs, yet he prints his name on his blades...no pics of an onion...
