He needs a hunting Knife. A fixed blade 6 to 8 in. in length and (proly1/8th thick as that is the thickness on his favorite lost knife).
Primarily used for deer. Im not sure how far into the processing he will use it but HE will BE CARRYING it on his belt while hunting and will field dress with it.Im not sure if he will be using it for smaller game so lets assume DEER hunting but a bit versatile for smaller stuff
If you folks could give me some ideas, preferably with pics and small words
(a hillybilly like myself can unnerstand ;)

I,ll probably be making it outta 1095 or 1084 and it WILL be flatground(as thats my skill level at this point)

On another note he was telling me how he had lost a Case hunting knife he had owned since he was 17yrs old and needs a replacement.( he,s 53 now)

Turns out I have it !
It was in an RV he sold me 5yrs ago, unbeknownst by him.He was STOKED to learn that last night.

THANKS ! Bryce

That's a long knife to carry for dressing out a deer. A 4" will do fine and that's what most hunters use. An 8" blade will do all the butchering quite well. Small game is better handled with a 3". The typical "hunting knife " is then a 4" drop point with a nice piece of stabilized wood for the handle.Blade width 1" , thickness 1/8".

YEP it seemed long to me too, but thats what he told me, and the case he lost that i have is about that w/ a narrow blade 3/4 to 1in and a short handle,,to short imo. Im gonna make the handle longer for sure and maybe shorten the blade.

Is that a 6-8 inch overall length or 6-8 inch blade length??

I use a small blade for deer. I find that too much blade gets in the way while hunting as well as while cleaning the deer.

Of course if it's what he wants then it's not wrong. Just not what works for me.

I was just curious about the length.

YEP the blade is 6in. on his old knife. Its been sharpened sooo many times it gotten very narrow, an the handles are very worn as well. I may make a shorter one for him and if doesnt like it, i can make another.

Anyhow what BLADE SHAPES do you guys like for a DEER KNIFE ?

His old one is up swept an clipped

This is the knife I carry. It is small enough to do any dressing chores I need it too and light enough that it doesn't bother me to carry it. I do a high grind on it so I have a thin cutting edge and usually use D2 steel.

Of course this is a personal preference thing and if he likes the longer blade then the more power to him. I tell people (jokingly of course) that you can tell the age of a hunter by the size of the hunting knife he carries. A young man usually carries something that looks like Rambo would have carried it, an older hunter is usually down to a small Case type knife.
