I need persuaded...

i bought my 6 for camp use and picked it over the 5 for the thinner blade and longer length. easier to baton with. that said, the minute the rat packs are back in stock, ill be getting a 5 in a khaki pack.

Why do you say that? If he never plans on using it or something then I could see the extra weight being an issue but I've carried mine around everywhere since I got it and use it for all kinds of stuff. Chopping food, starting fires, chopping/splitting wood, carving wood. I think that combine with his Izula he'd have an excellent setup. Some people prefer other blades and that's fine, there are lots of good options out there but I don't think he should get something else just because other people have this strange aversion to the RC-5.

I'm with David Lowry on this one... bring a hatchet or machete. Use your knife for the details. Then you are never unprepared. A machete weighs almost nothing and can do most of what a hatchet can do, but even my Fiskar's hatchet is light, and was cheap. I have never been in a situation where I needed to baton wood with a knife... even so, the RC 4 will do that.
Bringing an RC5 means you probably need to bring a smaller knife (Izula) for the small stuff (food prep, etc).

He's not trying to carve his way out of an airplane, he's camping.

i have a rc 5 and it think its a bit much to carry for day hikes and even 2day camping trips. but i am also a small guy 5'6''/5'7'' when im feeling spry tho;) great knife tho not disappointed that i got it, it will last a lifetime. i think you would be happier with a rc 3 or rc 4 if your worried about the size of the rc 3(blade length, like i was) then id get the rc 3. my next buy is going to be the rc 3.

hope this helps and good luck,

dylan

I think the RC-5 is a great knife, I took a while to decide which knife I would get as well. I use mine for everything, I have chopped down small trees, batoned kindling, carved a fire piston, whittled a spoon and prepped food with mine so far. There is NOTHING an RC-5 can't do, granted it may mean different technique between different knives to do the same tasks. But once you get used to using any knife then that's all that matters. I chose the RC-5 for the feel, the balance (perfect), the sheath(Eagle), the weight (I like the heft). For the money, it delivers and will continue for the rest of my days. It is my companion on my EDC and if I should loose it, it will be replaced immediately. It is one hell of a tool, but any of the RAT Cutlery knives are. Since you have put the RC-5 in your cart already and have it sitting there, in my opinion there is something drawing you to it, if you don't allow yourself to answer that, then if you are like me, you will just obsess over it until you do buy it, then your other purchase was for naught. Listen to your own gut.

You've decided on a RC-5. That's obvious. You just need someone to tell you it's a good idea. Well, if you want it, than its a good idea. No one can determine what is right for you, except you. It's a quality knife, built by a quality company, backed by a superlative guarantee. Pull the trigger. You'll end up with a RC-4, 3 and 6 anyway down the road . . . .

I ordered an Izula and a RC3 - that should cover my fixed blade needs for a while. Maybe another one to keep in the truck

RC5 is a beast of a knife. I agree with benchmade, just get it cause you'll eventually own the 3,4, and 6 anyways out of love for Rat Cutlery.;)

All great points, I appreciate the information and different perspectives. I think that I will just get the RC 5 cause tax return season is right around the corner and I will probably get a rc4 or 6 at that point as well, who knows maybe even the rc 3. Thanks again!

I have the rc5 and I love it. If you are wanting a knife that will chop and baton well then don't hesitate on getting the 5. If you need something for slicing and finer smaller work, then I would go with the 4 because it is thinner. I find it a little difficult making firesticks and splitting small pieces of kindling with the 5, but then again you do have the izula for that.

When in doubt - RC-4.

The RC-4 is just so good as an all around knife. It cuts well thanks to the full flat grind. It is compact and light enough to carry easily. It is more than stout enough to take abuse (3/16" thick at the spine). It has a great sheath. And the price is right.

The RC-4 is a great "do all" knife.

If it's too much testosterone that you have, prhaps those $125 are better spent elsewhere?...;):D

No way........... The money on the knife means he will have that knife for life. The money on "other" stuff, may give you something for life......but not anything you want!!!! Incurable has such a permanent ring to it.

Just buy the knife you want (and impress the a girl enough to get the other for free:D).

If I could only have one Rat knife it would be the 4, no question! In fact, when I hunt, that knife, and my Leatherman XTi were formerly all the knives I brought with me. I have a small folding saw-much better than batoning in an emergency. In base camp we have axes, machetes, etc. For your purposes the RC-5 is too much knife. Not nearly as versatile enough for an all-around camp/survival knife. Better combat knife. All that being said, I just picked up an Izula. It's even more dexterous than the 4 and I will likely use it more often for skinning, small chores. I'd be comfortable just with that for a weekend camp/hiking knife. When I thought I needed another knife I went smaller not larger based on actually experience in the field, not what's "cool!" :)

I have the 6 and love the heck out of it,but I would'nt hesitate to tote a 5 either. All RATs are great, pick the one you like.

I did end up with the 5, like it a lot! My reasoning was that I had the cash for it now, so why not just get it. Being that it is the priciest RAT. Next time I may only have 90 bucks and could not get the 5. The other point I liked is, I will end up getting most models anyway, so it really didnt make a difference. This is true as I am now trying to budget for maybe a 3/4 or hest. If it is not knives, it will just be something else!

If it is not knives, it will just be something else!

Here, Here good chap.

However, the something else is always the sticker. To me the other would be a RC6 instead of ANOTHER RC5.

I say when you start getting RAT knives just buy em all and get it over with. All I need is the HEST and RC6. Hell I bought the first four before the first one even arrived. This forum should have a health and financial warning. It is worse than crack.
