Hi guy's,

I think I have my bench picked out, but I'd like to get some suggestions on what kind of vise would work the best for a lot of manual filing and grinding. I need something that will protect the blade from flexing and vibrating when grinding and such. Any advice and suggestions welcome.

Thanks everyone,

Jeff

For working on a knife a pair of aluminum removable jaws is a plus. Wilton still makes some good stuff, I would check craigslist and ebay for used old vices with life in them. Not a lot of the new stuff is what it used to be.

What do you guys think of this one? Wilton Vise Not only does the base rotate, but so does whatever is clamped. What can I use to prevent vibration and flexing when filing while it's in the vise? Is there a vise out there specifically to help prevent that? There is a knifemakers vise that has been fabricated, but I can't see that it has solved the problem of flexing and vibration that happens when filing. All advise and suggestions welcome.

Thanks again,

Jeff

That Wilton will work and the price isn't too bad. Wilton makes top notch tools. This is a picture of a different Wilton vise but it is a lot more expensive than the one you found. I used it in my business and kept it and a larger one when I retired. Also pictured is a home made knife vise. I welded a piece of 2" square tubing to a piece of 2" sch. 40 pipe with a bolt to tighten things up. The upper jaw is a piece of 6061 aluminum with a piece of leather glued to it. The lower jaw is a piece of 3/4" X 1 1/2" oak about 14" long. You can rotate the thing in the pipe jaws of the vise to change work angles. You can slide the piece of oak in and out to provide support under your blade. Everything used was a leftover from something so it didn't cost anything to build but a few minutes of time.

Thanks arrowhead. Part of my problem is that I'm not sure how the blade will be oriented as I'm filing it. For instance when I due a plunge cut, will your homemade vise stop the blade from vibrating severely and flexing?

Jeff

It stops all flex and I've never noticed any vibration. Maybe I just can't file fast enough to cause vibration.

i have that same wilton that u asked about and have gotten great use out of it. the rotating jaws feature adds alot of options to how to do different jobs.
