I was able to purchase a very nice Damascus blank off the internet to try me hand at finishing it with my own handmade scales. I only have a grinder, a hand held rotary sander, and a hammer at my disposal for tools. and the handles I made are not terrible but they resemble somewhat of a kitchen knife :( and i would love some input from someone experienced in knife aesthetics as to something I could do with what I already have to make it look better, or at least less like a steak knife. Anything and everything is appreciated :)

You have a rotary tool? Like a Dremel? Look up Benchmade 950 Rift. Better yet watch some scale making vids on YouTube. It would be very easy to grind some scallops into those.

Good luck!

Oh also, this should probably be in the "tinkering" sub forum. ;)

dunno what you can actually do with a blade like that, but anyway. I did these with a belt sander and a dremel. Id suggest removing the rivets and putting something else in there. I used machine screws. I did this so I could remove the scales if I wanted to though.

You could also change the direction of the grain on the scales... not now of course.. but the next batch of homemade. Think diagonal... look for sweeping grains etc. Putting on a guard and maybe a pommel would add something to appearance. A 1/2 "D" with a forward sweep on the spine or something. Right now it looks like a cross between a hateful machete and the spartan short sword from the movie 300... LOL! You still have plenty to work with in terms of blade and handle.

I would separate the wheat from the chaff...But you can pull ugly old pins by thinning them with a drill bit (on a drill of course) until the metal can be picked and flaked out with an awl.
