Recently I purchased a Kershaw Boa off of eBay. The seller's description of the item said brand new, however when I got the knife I noticed spots of rust on the thumb grip grooves on the back of the knife and also spots of rust down inside the frame. I am pretty certain that the Boa comes with one of the Kershaw storage pouches as well. Can anyone verify this? I emailed the seller about the problem and he responded by being an asshole, stating that he didn't appreciate my implying that he is a liar.:jerkit: He also stated that the knife was kept in his personal collection. I don't really agree with holding on to a knife for any period of time and then trying to sell it as brand new, you could say that it is in mint condition but not brand new. I only paid $79.99 for the knife. What would everyone do? Send it back and get a refund or just keep it?

Well, I agree with you that if an auction represents it as "brand new" that it should be free of blemishes. Unfortunately, I have received a few knives over the years from dealers that were new in box supposedly but had a bit of rust or a nick or blemish. Fortunately I've always been able to return them hassle-free. My opinion is that if the auction says "mint" there should be no blemish whatsoever. If it does not say mint, that leaves the seller a little room for vagueness, since it can technically be brand new but with blemishes as I have seen (very rarely) from dealers. Also, if the auction did not specifically state that the winning bidder would receive a pouch, then you probably can't argue that one...

Either way, it sucks when you think you are getting a perfect knife and it comes in worse shape than you expected. You paid for a new knife and it's bad form for the guy to not fully disclose the condtion.

I agree with j33psru1e. eBay doesn't seem to me much of a buyers' paradise anymore. I still buy there, as there are still deals to be had, but I'd sooner buy from a local store or established, reputable on-line vendor. Often you'll pay little more, if any, than you would for a comparable item off eBay.

The guy told me to send the knife back and he'd refund my money but he acted like an asshole about it. I don't really trust anyone on eBay anymore. With my luck I'll send the knife back and not only be out the money but also the knife. I guess I'm better off keeping it and trying to clean it up with some oil although I will be sending photos of the rusty areas to the seller and I'll post them on this thread so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

In every state that I can search, "new" in the sale of goods means in new condition - without wear, damage, or blemish acquired since manufacture.

If it were me, I'd use some metal polish to remove the rust (You didn't say pitted.) and put this clown on my ignore list.

EBay is a risky place compared to forum sales, especially when it comes to folding knives. I have purchased several that arrived in condition other than represented -- sometimes exactly contrary to representations (e.g., "no cracks in scales" turns out to have badly cracked scales; "good snap" once arrived rusted shut.)

If you want a knife that's actually new, go to an on-line knife shop or one that exists in the real world. eBay is where individuals sell the stuff they no longer want. "Like-new" condition is the best you'll ever encounter on eBay.

I think part of the problem may be that Mikey is somewhat naive. He bought a knife for approx $40.00 less than an online dealer sells it (NGK - $124.xx). If buying from an individual, the best you can do is LNIB, not brand new.
That being said, he receives the knife & he feels it is not as described (and Mikey is probably right). The seller offers a refund. Soooo .... either keep the knife or return it. Problem solved! That's why I don't buy my knives on Ebay - can be too much of a PIA. Hope this works out for you Mikey.

I would keep the knife and clean it up. A little rust, assuming that's all it is, can be removed rather easily. If your gut tells you this guy seems shady, he responded like an ahole, then why take the chance to be taken again. Buyer beware on EPrey.

ya might try for a refund, i have gotten a few knives listed as LNIB that didnt have the pouch FWIW, the knives were all in like new shape though.

I've never had a problem with eBay. Every other time I've bought a knife that said "new" it arrived in mint condition. I think this guy just felt that I was personally offending him when all I really wanted to do was let him know that the knife was rusty and that he might want to do something about it (like purchase some oil and a polishing cloth). I left him negative feedback and am keeping the knife which is what I should have just done to begin with instead of trying to resolve the problem through e-mail. Anyone ever take one of these Kershaws apart? I think I'm going to have to in order to remove all of the rust. Is it hard to get them back together?

I've taken apart my Random Task, don't own a Boa. You want to make sure the knife is in the open position before removing the scales or the spring will pop.
If the screws are rusted than soak them with WD-40 for a little while. You can also try liquid wrench to loosen them. If all else fails send it into Kershaw. It would suck to have to wait again but you'll receive it back in top shape.

lots of other folks sure have had problems on ebay.

imho its certainly no way near bladeforums for honesty/reliability/truthfulness, not even close.

I recenlty bought new knife from a knife dealer and the knife had rusty spots on the blade and the knife did not look clean at all. It seemed to me the knife was sitting too long in the shelf and was not checked before shipping. I cleaned it up and kept it.
