A friend of mine graduated recently, and as a gift, I thought it would be nice to get her a good folder or fixed blade knife to add to her collection. I am on a budget though, and need it to be under or around $50. I would prefer namebrand, like SOG, Coldsteel, Spyder, stuff like that. I would also like to know the pros and cons of said blade.

What does she currently have in her collection? I'm not a lady, but from my experience most women prefer knives slightly smaller than most men. If you want to give her something she'll appreciate, it would help to know a little bit more about her current taste.

^^^ What the guy above said. Have any idea of what her tastes would be or what you'd like to get for her?

Look at the Kershaw Cryo. Great knife for under $50.00. Assisted flipper, opens easily, ambidextrious, small enough for a female, lifetime warranty, solid sturdy framelock.

Kershaw Scallion (many color options) or Spyderco Dragonfly would be my recommendations if you're looking for something smaller.

I was going to say a Cold Steel Code 4 but that is probably WAY too big for her.

Maybe she would like a purple Delica 4?

Just an EDC random task blade. Any color (preferably forest green black, or silver but it's not a priority), sort of on the small side (she's only 5' lol).

My lady is 5'3". To date she has stolen my Kershaw Cryo and Ontario Rat 2 (black/pink). She was after my Rat 1 (black/black). The rat 2 was a sacrifice to keep her away from my Rat 1. She consistently tries to steal my spyderco tenacious (black/black) and endura 4 (satin/black).

On topic, in my experience, ladies dig spydercos with the leaf shaped blade. Any of the above mentioned would be great choices in my opinion and all but the endura are well within your budget.

Ontario Rat 1 comes in green. $30. Might be able to find a Benchmade mini-grip for a little over $50 somewhere. I'd look for a Mini-grip. Think you can find the black handle model for $60 frequently. I paid $75 for a pink one.

Bk14/24, or an esee izula, excelent knives that will do just about anything you would need an edc knife to do.

Dangit, now I'm so conflicted over whether to get a an izula, or Endura. XD I need some help on this, which one would be best for random light to moderate with the possibility of heavy use EDC? She lives on a farm, so there is defiantly potential for heavy use.

If you go with a folder Byrd knives are great for the price. I've had a cara cara for years in G10

I agree with the above post, Kershaw cryo hands down. Try the G-10 model I heard it is a little lighter.

Well, if she understands knife maintenance. The warranty from esee cannot be beat. If she breaks it, they will replace it. Period. The carbon steel of the izula will require oiling as the coating wears to prevent rust.

The endura is a no nonsense folder with very little to take care of. The stainless vg-10 hold it's edge for a good while and the simple lockback design makes maintenance a breeze.

Short answer, I haven't found any reasonable task that either couldn't handle. That said, as I stated before, if she can handle keeping up with a carbon steel blade the izula would get my vote for ease of cleaning and warranty. Handle scales will cost you extra though.

Graduation calls for a classy knife so I would say a traditional slip joint. Take a look at Case and Queen knives, though queen is known to sending out blades that are pretty blunt so that may be an issue. A Peanut would be a good pattern to look at if she is going to try to get an office type job or type of job where a normal folding knife may be seen as out of normal and/or threatening due to it being small in size but it is quite versatile.
