Recommendation? I need to buy a second , "backup " chainsaw . What is current best mid range ? Is Stihl MS 271 worth the price ?

Here she be ! :p

Ready to cut, but mother nature not cooperating , so far .
Got to do some cutting ! Started pretty easy initially and cut eagerly . I"m going a bit easy to break-in .

Had only bucked a small downed tree for a few minutes when I noticed the chain was a bit loose . Shut her down to tighten the chain and inspect .

Went to restart ...nada , nada , nada ...false start / stall . Then nothing at all for maybe 100 pulls . 🥵

This is my first Echo and the UI is different , so figured I should do some research ( before shooting my brand new saw to pieces ) .

I suspected I flooded the crap out of it , and confirmed this on the net .

Found this video , followed her starting procedural advise exactly , and it has worked perfectly so far .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

just buy a couple Silky saws....
Yes. Japanese Silky saws are the best. It requires no fuel. It's also a lot less noisy. And it weighs next to nothing compared to a chainsaw, so you can carry it anywhere. Try hauling a chainsaw through the the brush. You'll wish you had a Silky instead.

I have this Silky Pole Saw , works great for what it is ...but does not replace a chainsaw for more extensive uses , IMO .

Assuming you can reach 20' up into the tree with a handheld saw that is.....but the Hayate works great when you need to cut stuff you can't reach....

I don't buy saws any more, but when I did, I chose based on the dealer rather than the brand. Good customer support was more important to me than brand name.

Last time my ranching partner and I went to cut wood was early February I believe ,of this year. We had some friends go with us as they needed some fire wood. My partner's and mine Echos started on the first or second pull. The other folks never did get their two Stihls started. So Steve, my ranching partner and I did all the cutting. He's got a small 14" bar on his, (he's 78 and likes to use a smaller saw), and mine is only a 18" bar. But with these two little saws we filled all three pickups. Not bashing Stihls as I had a very good one years ago. I think its the gas that CALIF requires. Our friends had mixed up their own fuel and couldn't get them going (they'd recently moved from WY). Steve and I were both using and have for years the premix. Starts with just a couple of pulls every time. Lots and lots of oak to cut. We try to keep downed stuff cleaned up as much as we can. From that day:

All we cut is oak.
