I need to buy five packs

IMO larges beat mediums hands down

I feel the opposite. ;) It's been a while but IIRC you have to use the frame with the large, it's not an option. The medium carries heavy loads easier with the frame but there are times I'd rather not have the frame.

Not to sound like a broken record, but the medium ALICE (w/o frame) would be the way to go.

Slow down there big guy, the one on the right is my daughter. She has that machete for a reason and you don't want to be it.

Mac

What about the one on the left? ;)

I'm surprised to hear that you guys used the mediums so much. I was only issued the large and only saw the mediums being used by comms guys. Fortunately I was allowed to use a civilian pack much of the time so that made life much better. One of my worst memories was carrying an 80+lbs ruck and having the quick release on the shoulder strap fail during a long movement (training only, fortunately). I tried duct taping it back in place while moving but it didn't work very well, so I basically ended up carrying most of the weight on my left shoulder for the rest of the field exercise. Alice and I were no longer on speaking terms after that.

What about the one on the left?

She's available...

Mac

hahaha. that's funny.
hey mac, where would you be staying in brazil? and what's with the camouflage clothing, are you in the army or something like that?
sorry about the dumb questions. but it's kinda fascinating to see my own land here at bladeforums.

Hector,

I live in Belo Horizonte, the area in the photos is near Ouro Preto. I'm only in the US temporarily.

I normally use OD pants and a gray long sleeve T-shirt in the bush. A lot of the guys already own Brazilian pattern camo clothes and I have a few sets of loaner US Army BDU's. Some of these guys are from a lower income bracket and it makes things go smoother for everyone in the group if they all have the same quality of clothes. What I'd like to do is go to a standard long sleeve T-shirt with my own logo. Mac

ETA- For those of you who don't know Belo Horizonte is Brazil's 3rd largest metropolitan area. At 5.3 million people, the greater Belo area has the same population as the nation of Finland, and close to a million more people than Ireland.

Go to www.freezedryguy.com and checkout the deals he has Pict. Hey, let Pict get them first guys don't dish on his deal I'm serving him up! I have no connection to the FD guy but have bought from him and he's good to go!

Pict,

So you still need a couple more packs here... I'm going to look around a little.

Thanks for all the input and offers. I'm going to go with the Medium ALICE w/o frame, in terms of quality, carrying capacity, and price range this is exactly what I need. They actually have a little more carrying capacity than I need, but that is a good thing. For the load these guys are hauling (light) the lack of a frame will not be a problem. Mac

I see the lady on the left has one of your modded 'chetes!:D--KV

Correct. That's a 13 inch Saico, Brazilian made, that I use for my course to give them a feel for a heavier, shorter machete. Normally they carry either a 14 or 16 inch Tramontina but the short, heavy Saico is a good tool to have around. Mac

pict, brilliant mod by the way. I plan on getting one from Offthemapoutfitters eventually. I would have loved this in the jungle! I haven't been in the jungle since 2002, and that was SE Asia, so it wasn't too bad. I don't have any plans to go into Mean Green any time soon, but it would be nice for some uses here in the US.

you can pick up north face packs second hand for like $3 each at some of these flea markets

heck...maybe we could all work out some kind of pack donation plan?

I haven't handled one of the Off The Map machetes but from the photos they are exactly what I would do given the tools. I do my own mods by hand, time consuming but they work for me.

Joe,

I got bit by a spider last night on the back of the leg. It was in my bed and I thought it was a pin or something at first. He got me good, about as bad as a bee sting.

Mac

Where did you get bit, in PA or Brazil Pict? If here in PA make DAMN SURE it was not a Brown Recluse spider as they are common in the region!!!
