I sold a knife to a forum member and let him send me a check. He then e mailed me about another knife that I had for sale. I told him to send me another check and I would put the second knife in the package with the first knife. I sent the knives off the same day that I received the second check. The guy e mails me on saturday and tells me that he received the knives and did not want them because they had serrated edges. Fair enough. I told him to send me the knives back on Monday and I would send him a check out at the same time. I seems that the guy wants me to send him the check first and when he receives the check he will send my knives back. Now I am leary about sending him the check in fear that I might not get my knives back. I have asked him twice to send my knives back on Monday and I will send the check out, but it seem to me that he does not want to do it. Am I wrong? Will I be in the wrong if I e mail him and tell him that I will send him a check when I receive my knives back? Thanks I will be waiting to hear from you guys and gals.

Well, going strictly on the facts as you present them here, I'd say that he should send you the knives back and await your check.

Not knowing who the forum member is I can't speak one way or another toward his credibility etc., but if I were him I'd have very little concern that you'll be upping and moving before he gets his money back, plus your ties to the knife community are established.

Under the circumstances, I'd keep the funds until the knives were returned.

Seems to me that since the first half of the deal went off without any problems besides an apparent lack of communication concerning the edge style of the knives, there should be an element of trust and the return phase of the transaction should be done simultaneously.

No need to go into names. I think we just settled the matter between ourselves. I , as promised will send him a check on monday and he has aggreed to ship my knives back. In my 2 years here I have had good dealings with all forumites and some I now know well enough so that when we make a deal I put the knives in the mail while the check arrives. I will gladly do business with this forum member again. I just wanted a few opinions to make sure that I am always doing the right thing. Thanks for your imput.
Commuication is the key.

I understand the emotions that you're feeling as I am in a similiar situation.

You are a frequent and respected member of the Forums, so if the other party has also been around a while he/she has probably built up some credibility with other Members also. I think this is one of those times that you will have to extend your trust slightly beyond your comfort zone by going ahead and putting the Check in the Mail. My guess is the only thing you might experience is that the other party will "wait" to receive the Check before placing your knives in the mail (and that is purely speculation).

I put ALOT of weight in "living up to your word" or "doing what you say you are going to do". I understand the uneasiness that comes with a deal like this, but I also think that if you do what you think is right that's all that can be expected.

I know that you guys have already settled this matter but just for discussion purposes, I'd like to pose a question. Since you waited to mail the knives until you received his check, shouldn't he have the same option available to him? It seems to me that the only thing that changed was who had the knoves and who had the money. maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way...

Bobby, my reaction would be to wait until the knives come back. Simultaneous is OK but no way would I agree to sending the refund and have the knives ship then. Good luck.
