So it's been about a year and i still havent got my first knife. My birthday is coming up in june, and a few of my friends are in the US of A, and the time is ripe for getting my first and probably last knife for a few years or so.

So please help me with some recommendations and help on maintenance.

Here are my requirements.

I am 14 year old, and have an average hand size.

I would like one knife and a maintenance set.

The budget for the knife itself should be about $75-100.

The knife should be plenty durable, and be comfortable to hold and use for long periods of time. This will be my one and only EDC.

I live in India, and it is quite humid here, and knives frequently rust, so i would like a good knife that will hold up well to humidity.

The blade should be comfortable to use, about the size of a SAK.

It should be easy opening, and must must be perfect the first time as i cant exchange it in India.

Is this sharpener okay? http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=77

Thanks a lot Everybody, for both knowledge and time,

Kabir

P.s- serrated or plainedge??

Most of what you're saying falters down to the one knife i ever seem to think of.
I absolutely love my Cold Steel Mini AK-47. VERY strong, no bladeplay, and almost perfect blade centering.
Comfortable, and opens very fast with both the plate, and wave "mechanism".
But if you are going for no-rust whatsoever, look at Spyderco's H-1 steel.
But the Mini AK-47 doesnt rust too easily from my experience.
And they can be found for your price point. Ive been carrying one for about 4-5 months now, give or take a few weeks, and I love it
Oh, and definitely plain edge. Way more useful.
That looks like a good sharpener too.
I use a Lansky Crock-Stick 2-stage.
Sounds fancy, but really isnt

Ummm I was thinking you might be better served by a good sized fixed blade I would recommend the buck 119 their 420hc steel is very good! At least in my experience just a good coat of oil every now and then a good wipe down after every use and you should be fine but if you are really worried about rust get something in h1 it is said to be unrustable!

You need a delica 4 with the green handles and ZDP-189 steel, the sharpmaker is a pretty good system easy to use and it will take care of your basic sharpening needs.

here's your knife..

+1 or the Endura Full Flat Grind. You may also want to check out the Spydercos in H-1 steel since they are rust proof
I had an Delica as my only EDC for a long time (like 10 years) before it got stolen.
I have an Endura full Serrated now as an experiment, but it does not replace my Paramilitary2
Stick with the Spyderco Sharpmaker sharpener, but the one upgrade that people recommend is to get the ultra-fine rods for it, and maybe a cheap strop with the black and green compounds (there is a sub-thread called 'tinkering and embellishment' for your sharpening needs. So I would stick with a plain edge blades event though Spyderco will sharpen their serrations for free, it sound like you would have a hard time sending it in.
I'd like to find a Delica FFG in a good steel too someday.

Here are some pictures.

I Would Get:
Spyderco Paramilitary 2
Spyderco Sage 1
Spyderco Manix 2
Spyderco Stretch
Spyderco Endura
Spyderco Delica
Spyderco Native
Benchmade Griptilian
ZT 0350
ZT 0400
Kershaw JYD II Composite Blade
Kershaw Rake
And Many More.

Welcome to the Forums, Rudrakabir!

I'd recommend a Spyderco Delica 4 if you want a plain edge and the Salt 1 if you decide on full-serrations. The Sharpmaker would serve you well in either case...

Good luck! :)

It's hard to go wrong with a Delica or Endura 4 also another favorite of mine is the Spyderco Stretch I find the blade profile a bit more useful and the handle equaly as ergomic as the Endura also you might could find a ZT 350 whithin your price range as well as a Kershaw JYD II You've got lots of options given your price range.

Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT get anything with zdp-189 steel if you are worried about rust. Zdp stains quite easily. In terms of a delica I would honestly just stick with vg-10 as it takes a very keen edge, holds it quite well, is easy to sharpen and generally will not rust unless neglected. Spyderco's "salt" line feature h1 steel which is 100% rust proof but given the target market of those knives they are built on the older delica/endura platform and as such lack some of the features of the newer models suck as full nested liners and upgraded handle texturing and pocket clip. In terms of other options I would look at the benchmade griptilian line as well as kershaws line up, they offer MANY knives that represent a tremendous value in your price range.

As far as sharpeners go, the spyderco sharpmaker is one of the best basic systems and would be great for a beginner like yourself. I will challenge you however to learn to sharpen free hand (using the sharpmaker will help you develop the feel). There are not many things more satisfying than your first mirror polished, hair whittling free hand edge...

so, i have decided on a Salt 1 and a sharpmaker set.

Do i need any accessories or anything else to go with it?? Please do not forget, this knife wil be with me from now at 14 yrs to atleast 20 at the very least as my EDC.

Have I made a good choice??

I did not choose the cold steel as it looks a bit aggressive and the pacific salt is a leeetle big for me to carry.

P.s- how much of a chance is there that the knfe does not fit my hand or is too small?? Cuz it it will not be with me until it comes to india and then it cannot be exchanged back or gven back.

Is Amazon.com a okay place to buy from?

Thanks everybody,

Amazon is a great place to purchase blades from!

They typically have the best prices, and shipping is fast. Enjoy you're salt 1, it's a great blade from what I've herd.

I Think You Should Get a Spyderco Native And The Sharp Maker.

The Native Is Around $50 And It's s30v FRN, And Built To Last. I Love That Knife.

I live in India, and it is quite humid here, and knives frequently rust, so i would like a good knife that will hold up well to humidity.

I lived in India for a while, about 6 km from Vijayawada in the state of Andhra Pradesh. I had a Sypderco Endura in VG-10, a Buck Bantam, and a Wenger Ranger, and I didn't have a problem with rust on any of them.

Where in India do you live?

Also, are your friends shipping the knife to India, or are they visiting India and bringing it with them? The reason I ask is because when I was living in India I ordered about $200 worth of knives and had them shipped to my India address. By the time the package reached me, the box had been pillaged and all my knives had been stolen except for one. I had to reorder my knives, but I had them shipped fedex the next time. They arrived fine.

Good choices. Definitely get the ultra-fine rods for the sharpmaker. They sell them individually so you'll have to buy two.

I live in Gujarat, coastal side.

I cant get two knives, cuz i want one knife and i dont think i would want to buy too many at once. and the budget includes the sharpmaker.
