I Notice many LEO Carrying Cheap Knives?

I would imagine having a semi decent primary folding knife would be a priority.

Why would that be a priority? A cheap knife will cut, pry, scrape, and twist like an expensive knife; but when it's butter knife dull or broken it isn't a pain to replace. So it won't hold it's edge as long as a $400 dollar folder, big deal, they don't need to shave with it; for the most part they might just cut a sandwich in half with it.

Its very troubling horrifying nauseating borderline regergitating to see the knives nonknife people buy.

I notice the Starbucks crew are usually carrying some fancy knives even the ladies. Probably, not automatics, tho.

That made me grin. I used to manage Starbucks stores. I knew a lot of people in the company who carried Benchmade, ZT, or Kershaw. Of course, I’m in knife country. I grew up in Tualatin, OR, and my last Starbucks location was in Wilsonville, which is immediately adjacent.

Four of us at my last store were also avid shooters.

Regarding LEOs... after I left Starbucks, I was in the gun business for a bit. I met a lot of LEOs there, and became friendly with a few. Most weren’t gun or knife people, at all. However, the ones I knew who were into these things were very knowledgeable and practical with their choices.

When on-duty I carry an old beat up Emerson Mach 1 that I bought after I was sworn from the large auction site at a decent price. Sent it in to Emerson for re-furbishing and it came back fully functional. It is a decent solid knife that I don't mind getting scratched up (scratches add character). I leave my nice stuff for when I go hiking or camping.

Almost all high end chefs I know use throw aways as well. They still know how to make a 4**** dish.

When I was Trooper I carried a three bladed Buck slip joint, maybe a Stockman - I forget.

It wasn't Tacti-Cool (I had an ankle gun as a back-up) but I used it for cutting stuff - from tomatoes and onions to sandwiches to packaging ... just for cutting stuff. Those were the days.

I had a Buck 110 (or maybe 112) in my briefcase for gutting deer that were fresh and the like. My camping knife back then was a Buck 119 Special. I considered myself then (and now) a Knife Guy though not a particularly high end Knife Guy.

Now, many years later, a S&T is my 9-5 and I have more tactical folders than I know what to do with. LOL.

Don't know where the concept of LEO not making much of a salary comes from. The state police in my state make $250,000/yr and there are a bunch on the hook for Overtime Fraud and trying to retire to keep their big old pensions intact . I do not believe they carry cheap knives cause they cant afford better. they just don't care about knives like most people do not. Now if its their personal vehicles then you will see the money being spent.

A buddy of mine who is a cop carries a cheap Smith & Wesson when he does carry a knife. He also carries a cheap light from Wal-Mart. He says if he loses it or it breaks he can replace both cheap.

Another buddy who is a cop carries Surefire lights. We've never talked about pocket knives. I'll have to check.

I guess it depends on the cop.

State police in Michigan make 44k a year before taxes. I believe 250k is astronomical and highly unlikely almost every where.

Maybe Beverly hills police make that much, shrug.

I haven't personally know a LEO officer for years and we never talked gear, just the law.

Isn't there a concept of standard issue? Why do they have to buy their own stuff? I figure department would provide gun, flashlight, knife and other basic necessities for the job.

Don't get me wrong. I work in an office environment and I don't blame people for spending extra for their career. No waste in spending on gear you use 8 hours every day

well we have a mandatory LEO at construction sites in this state. everywhere else they use flag men. here we pay police OT to line their bank accounts with. when there was an attempt to use flaggers there were reported incidents of intimidation and assault on the flaggers and the businesses by the cops. very similar to what the Mafia and Unions do in strongarm tactics.

every cop I see with a knife clipped to the pocket its always a Smith and Wesson or a Paraframe . Not only do many jurisdictions make the officer pay for that stuff but they also have strict limits on what is approved for carry . just like they don't want the citizen to carry anything resembling a weapon they don't want the LEO using a dagger to defend themselves when attacked . Bad for image management.

My son-in-law is a Chief of Police in a smaller town in Michigan. 28yrs a cop, much of it in SWAT.
He doesn't want to bring home (at night)...a nice knife that has traces of meth, coke and blood on it.
Makes sense.

I'm not sure I 'get it'. So he brings home a cheap knife with all those things?
