On this one I found a plastic spacer for under the pivot screw, plus the weird pin insert. The knife is still locked up like a beast, but this is off.

It is getting ridiculous. On this one I found a plastic spacer for under the pivot screw, plus the weird pin insert. The knife is still locked up like a beast, but this is off.

This should have been sold as not even a factory second but rather a factory 3rd.

Either the hole was drilled too deep, or they are using the washer to keep the screw from loosening rather than using loctite.

Not sure what that pin is for.

I've lost all faith in the 4 Max. From experience and research I have found the following problems with both versions; Scales not parallel, liner bowed, gap between liner and lockbar, Lockbar hangs up and blade flops open in the closed position, BAD lock-stick, horrible edge grinds, pivot pin not keyed (steel pin that creates a "D" hole mislocated on Italian version and no flat on the USA version) Paper thin pocket clip that bends easily and doesn't return to shape, blade is very hard to move with the pivot screw backed all the way out.

and BAD centering!

The pictured knife went back to Cold Steel. I had two others that I returned to the seller (and even for $200 each, it wasn't worth it)

There is nothing wrong with Andrew Demko's design. It's the vendors CS is using. If any dimension is off, you kick it back to the factory and demand it be fixed or rebuilt. I mean, come on. Would anyone here really want a shittier knife sooner?

Don't get me wrong, I only own Cold Steel folders and have a nice collection of VG-1 San Mai III fixed blades and have defended Cold Steel on many occasions, but a $250-$300 folding knife shouldn't be a crap shoot.

Who is building these for Cold Steel in Italy?
I'd like to know as well. I asked the same about the Italian Master Hunters, and was told it could be any of the Maniago makers: Fox, Lionsteel, or possibly Coltallerie Maserin.

There are others, but I believe those are the big 3.

Or stick to the smaller models like American Lawman.
Even better, why not let WE knife manufacture them, some of the China makers has the best mass production quality out there.

The workmanship on my; made in Italy; Italian stilettos is not very impressive either.

Good thing I'm well supplied with Cold Steels. Seems like a lot of quality issues lately.

How hard can it be to make this knife right ? ive seen much more complicated designs, flush inlays, this seems pretty simple, especially with cnc machines. My code 4 ,swift, and recon 1 are perfect, maybe they should be made in that factory....

I've had really good luck with the new Taiwan made folders. Great F&F and no issues
My Taiwan produced CS folders bought over the last couple of years have all had very good fit and finish. So any problems with the 4 Max certainly aren t company wide.

It took me a while to take the plunge(Taiwan eek)but I have been very pleased so far with the folders and fixed blades(want to see/feel the new San Mai to compare to my vintage collection).

Lionsteel and Fox make excellent big folders under the Bastinelli design label and their own. This is either another maker or Cold Steel isn't paying for quality.
