I ordered a Vanguard yesterday

The OP pic was a "file photo'. Here's the actual knife I received. Sharp as hell out of the box. I love it. I've wanted one for years

That's a nice one, and a good price. What steel does it have?
Here's a picture of my two Vanguards. The rubber handled one was a build-out at $40. and in my opinion it's a better knife than the Alaskan Guide. The grip is better for an actual user. The AG's handle is very slippery, dry or wet. And I know the coating is supposed to harden and protect the blade, but I'm old fashioned, I like to see the blade in low light situations.

The steel on the rubber handle build-out is ATS-34

That's a good looking knife! I love my rubber handled Vanguard. Probably the most versatile knife I own. The perfect all-rounder.

I have used a rubber handle on elk and deer for over ten years now. It is great knife and very easy to sharpen. I do not like the corduroy sheath, anyone have a good leather that they like?

Being a 2015 model the steel is 420HC

You've got a great knife. Even though my favorite steel is S30V un-coated , I'd say about half of my users are 420HC. I was thinking of bringing them together for the Sunday picture show if I can locate them all. Oh, the slipperiness, I've noticed it only on that series of the Alaskan Guide Vanguard. The regular diamondwood that Buck uses doesn't have that problem. If you look at my picture, the AG almost looks like it is coated with glass. It doesn't allow for a good grip.

That said...the AG Vanguard sheath is nice:
