I-pod v. other MP3 player

I use my PDA (Dell Axim X51v) and some high-capacity SD cards. Good quality sound and tough while also being useful. Listen to tunes, edit work documents or just surf all at the same time.

I have an IPod 30 GB and it is pretty slick. The sound quality is impressive.

I-tunes is a royal pain in the ass though and at the end of the day I would probably be better off with an MP3 player but hey, it was a gift!

The WORST part is trying to share your Itunes library with more than ONE computer. What a pain.

2nd gen 1gb shuffle, running with gtkpod on ubuntu 7.04 Who says you need to run itunes? :p My only problem is that I don't quite get 2 working days on a charge, usually fire it up when I get up (noon ish), and plug it in when I get home (0030 or 0230). I was the first one at work, now we have 20 or so of em on the floor.

There are even ways to replace the apple firmware with linux drivers and get games and a screensaver on there if you get one with video.

i dont like ipods so i have a creative zen microphoto. i can listen to the radio, record voice or off the radio, and i can just rip cds straight to it.

I would recommend anything by Archos.

Archos is a company that when the Ipod had a basic display they were already releasing them with photo viewing capabilities. Currently they are moving away from the MP3 scene as it were and going for a more portable video player, however, their model 402 Gmini Camcorder is awesome. It features a very vibrant screen and camcorder, microphone with a pretty decent video codec.

They are rather cheap. With the largest (160 gb and a gigantic screen) for something like 400 dollars. They just released one with a touch screen and wifi.

I bought a half gig shuffle before I knew better. Used Itunes once and when I put my ipod in a different port of my computer it erased all the music I had just payed for on Itunes. I was incredibly pissed that there paranoia about losing money caused their product to rip me off that I sent an angry Email to ITunes and Apple saying I would never buy another product from them and to take me off their mailing list. I put Amarock on my ipod and bought a decent pair of senninheiser earbuds(CX300's) and never looked back. Apple still sends me tons of spam though.

I would get a cheap creative flash and spend my money on good quality headphones. or go all out and get a top of the line video model.

i´ve only heard good things about I-audio or iaudio and iriver, have an iriver myself, flashbased, really like it, small enough, powerful enough for almost all types of headphones. a good product. if i buy another one with larger capacity it will be a flashbased one, definitely iaudio or iriver.

I recently got a Sony-Erricson w810i "walkman" cell phone. Came with 128mg pro duo memory stick, but I upgraded to 1gig quickly. Now I can carry hours and hours of music, a full length movie (or two) and still have plenty of room for those gorgeous 2 mega-pixel photos it takes.

Great built-in mp3 player too. Playlists, equalizer with both presets and manual adjustments, and random/repeat.

I-Pod, Never have had any trouble with it at all, battery is still going strong at 2 years, I-Tunes works perfect for me with no hassles. There are so many extra products for it.

Sansa e200. The 4GB model. Upgradable, FM tuner, excellent battery life, photos, video, drag and drop file transfer. Forget Ipods. I am living in New Zealand right now and have the opportunity to see ALOT of portable music devices. So far mine has been the best! Check it out

I had a creative zen.... the original... I only bought it two/three years ago and already I cannot find any parts for it, like a new battery. grr So I am not a big fan of Creative. I do however like the sansa, but will probably go for an i-pod just because soo many accessories are available for it.... and they have huge memory models.

IPod is the way to go IMHO. The Apple support structure, Itunes software, and their brick & mortar shops make them an easy choice.

If you want to give Apple a go for a reduced price, check out the Apple website and shop their refurbished IPods. My wife's Nano is the 2Gb refurb unit that has been going strong since last year for $99 delivered. I picked up my 30Gb refurb click wheel Ipod for $99 delivered. Nary a hickup with either.

Razz

MP3 RECORDINGS SUCK!!!!! My 60 gig IPod lets me record a sufficient amount of music at full or lossless resolution, so for me, there is no other alternative. The minute a high capacity (250 gig plus), high rez IPod comes out that can handle SACD, DVD-Audio, BluRay or HD-DVD audio signals at their native rate, i will be in line to buy one.

I like my sanza 2xx (I have the 8gb version). Good battery life, fm radio, video, recording better volume than my ipod nano--all round better imo. Also, if you unplug the thing quickly without d/c from itunes or whatever it doesnt crash and lose everything. Makes it so you can travel with it and use it on other peoples comps without the need of some dummy program.

I don't like that Ipod is limited only to their format :thumbdn: . MP3s are ubiquitous.

FALSE!!

iPods will play any format(AAC, MP3, WAV, etc.) but Protected Windows Media Files. iTunes will convert unprotected Windows media files to AAC or MP3 format or any of the other formats available in the preferences.

When I have about 60gb of mp3s on my computer. They are all in "my music" folders. Windows media player provides a link to them. If you want to put them on an (Apple) Ipod, they need to be copied into the iTunes player, DOUBLING the amount of HD space needed.

FALSE!!!

Simply set the preferences in iTunes to NOT copy to the iTunes library. It will then reference the music and not double the amount of space on your HD. The downside is if you move, rename, etc then you will have to tell iTunes where it went before you can play the music.
