usually

but it seems it isn't the most popular choice, most prefer kydex it seems

so whats ur sheath preference, and why

i like leather, because it's natural and i like the looks and feel of it

Had that option when I recently bought my SOG field Pup--bought the local one with the leather because I will carry this one in a pack. This allows easier access and I like the look.

I'm doing this at the suggestion of another since I've lost three sheath knives in the past.

BTW-didn't replace those for 20 years (I was quite upset) just used the other guys knives or a folder.

I prefer a nice leather sheath too, it just looks good. Having said that I also like the flexibility of a kydex sheath with a Tek-Lok. I'd really like to find someone that'll make leather covered kydex sheathes. I know Greg Lightfoot makes them for his knives, I'm not sure if he will make them for others.

I perfer three materials the same, I like cordura and nylons like what eagle uses for ease of mounting, pockets. I like leather for looks, feel and durable material. I like kydex because of know sheath to knife contact, and ease of mounting, also it's durability.

I prefer leather if I am going to be wearing it for a long period of time, as well as the looks of the leather. I prefer kydex if I am going to be out and jumping around, ar if I might be going into a very moist environment. Albeit, a good looking leather sheath, or a nice Kydex sheath, I like the same. Both have their ups and downs.

Depends... I like leather sheaths for 'traditional' high carbon steel blades (Marble's Campcraft and Fieldcraft in 52100), CS Master Hunter and SRK (OK, the handles are Kraton, I know), Roselli erapuukko and Carpenter's knife (Arctic birch, Krupp W75 steel -- I made new sheaths out of heavier leather than the originals but kept the plastic inserts). On the other hand, Normark's Concealex sheath is perfect for my F1, as well as the slick one he made for my Dozier K1. To confess, I also made a leather pouch style sheath for the Dozier, as its jigged bone grip seemed to give that traditional look. I treat all my leather sheaths with SnoSeal, which inhibits moisture absorption.

I HATE kydex sheathes and have broken several. One was because I slipped crossing a stream and landed on the knife and took a chunk out of the sheath. The other, I'm not sure what happened... I got home after a hike and there was a nice crack in the sheath, and I don't think I'd even taken the knife out at all on the hike.

Beyond that, I don't like that a lot of kydex sheathes seem to let the knife rattle around. Kinda ruins the tranquility of the hike for your knife to rattle around in its plastic box.

I like the look and feel of leather. For sheathed folders (ie. Buck 110) I prefer leather, but I like a good nylon sheath for fixed blades. Unfortunately, most companies don't know what a good nylon sheath is.

I'm thinking about making a kydex lined nylon sheath for my RTAK because that's the worst sheath I've ever seen.

I generally prefer leather because of the looks and fell. That said, i prefer Kydex for modern/tacticool looking knives.

Leather! I am going to attempt making my own very shortly and also prefer the natural feel and look to it than kydex.

Leather sheaths are my favorite. They look better, feel better and just seem to compliment a knife better, IMHO.

I'll take a leather sheath any day. They age along with the knife and take on a personality. Properly maintained, a leather sheath will last for decades and smell great too. :)

As for Kydex, I detest the stuff. To me it is almost sacrilege to put a fine knife in a plastic sleeve.

everything else just seems wrong for the traditional knives i tend to gravitate too:) Leather properly maintained will last for a good long time and develops its own character:thumbup:
For me...Leather hands down

Wut he said...
Although Kydex is a wonderful product and certainly sheaths made from it serve a very specific purpose, personally, I don't need to fulfill that purpose! They are ugly, noisy, and when you consider that knives are a very old and traditional tool, stuffing them into a modernized container seems to be akin to blasphemy! I have knives in leather sheaths that I've had for 50 years and the leather is still fine. Treat it properly every few years ( no need to do it every week...) and it will last until you have to eat it to survive.

If you hunt, kydex and plastic sheaths make a lot of noise on your gear and any stick as you slide by makes noise. I prefer leather for ease of sheathing as well, no thumb push or 20lb of force to break friction. I have hard sheaths that are difficult to control the knife on unsheathing(dangerous). My rat sheaths are ok with the molle back but I have mummified the plastic with paracord to reduce noise and for extra cordage.

It depends on the sheath, and the knife in it. Kydex is much better, IMO, for concealment and versatility (see the above post mentioning the tek-lok), but leather is much classier, quiter and some knives just dont look right in a kydex sheath.
