Man...Where to start. I waited a week for my new Spyderco Stretch ZDP-189. It's here. The action was a little rough, so like an idiot, I take it apart....

45 Minutes later I got the lock back situated, as that popped out, but now I can't get the other liner on the knife to start screwing everything in. It looks like a plastic tab on the lock bar, piece is preventing an even mating of the two liners.

Please help!

I screwed it back together ignoring the plastic tab, and yeah. Totally sucks. The lock is very light and there is no detent, etc...OH wait, I left the other liner out, no wonder it mated ok, ignoring the plastic tab. This is what working 12 hours today and then coming home to this ordeal for an hour will do to a man.

This really sucks. I'm thinking about just returning it.

Watch a youtube video? I've never disassembled a lockback. You'll figure it out.

Hey, I had the same dang problem with the Endura. There is a trick to getting the lock bar back in place. If you do it right, its easy. If not, its impossible. Let me see if I can find the youtube video that shows it.

Way to void your warrenty :p I suppose you could always send it back to spyderco in a Baggie with a note ... Why take apart a brand new knife instead of clean it, lube it and give it time to break in ?

Watch this at 3:00. Its an Endura, but maybe it will give you some ideas about your lock:

I've never had one apart but the link Mr powernoodle posted makes it clear what goes where. I know that doesn't make it go back together on its own but it's more than a start I think.

Thanks Powernoodle, I didn't know you void the warranty upon taking a spyderco apart. Perhaps they're not designed to easily go back together.

Yeah, It's pretty simple. But springing the lockbar, and holding it together, with FRN moving on you, and the plastic tab on the scale, makes putting it back together a challenge.

I had the same problem when I took my Delica apart. From what I can remember, you something to push the backlock spacer to get that little tab into the liner. I believe I used a small, thin screwdriver. It's frustrating but not impossible.

Thanks again powernoodle. I should of checked on youtube. my lockbar method isn't as good as that guys.

Oh, he says the knob keys into the liner. This is gonna suck.

Yep, because if you've already put it together wrong, you've probably damaged it, and the warranty doesn't cover damage done by improper assembly by untrained persons (namely anyone who doesn't work for the maker).

Happy to assist. I fought and fought with a Delica back in the day before I figured it out from youtube.

If you have damaged something, or can't get it back together, its no biggie. Just get Spyderco to get it fixed up for you. They may charge you a little, but its not the end of the world. There's a little Mayan calendar humor for you.

She's all set. Thanks again. Once I watched the video, it's not that bad, my ruger mark III can sometimes be a bit more challenging terms of getting it back together.

Maybe I can eat dinner now......

The stretch has a tiny amount of play, but it had the same amount out of the box. This is normal for a lock back, correct?

Yup, the way shown here is probably going to be the easiest way to go about it. You have to get the liners to sandwich the lock spring / torsion arm. FRN flexes and gives all over the place even with one liner in place. The G-10 and CF versions not so much. Get the female part of the screw and start it in the hole where the lock bar goes.... push it in just a bit but not enough to poke thru the liner.....Put a little piece of tape behind it so it won't fall out. Once you begin to drop the lock bar in, push the female part thru and screw it together. By the time you are done you should be able to crack a walnut with just a pinch :D
