• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

I need help. The survival story was of a young man stranded below deck of a wooden hulled ship..sunk in the ice? He used his knife to carve his way out..and made use of the items on the ship to survive. I dont remeber much of the story...but it was like all the others I have read...someone used his wits to survive! Therefore, it bound itself to my heart. Gene

I used to own a copy of this book when I was a kid...I know the story, however, I can't remember the title either! Now I'm gonna go nuts trying to think of it! -Matt-

If I'm on the same wavelength as Gene, the name of the book was...

"The Iceberg Hermit"

Found it on Amazon.com, once I saw the cover a bit more of the story came back to me...whaling ship hits an iceberg etc..

Now I can go to sleep tonight and not be thinking of the durn book title! :D -Matt-

THANK YOU!!!! I am gonna buy it.

I believe Arthur Roth authored it. However, I think the name of the book was Shipwrecked. Was part of the story about the lead character raising a polar bear after killing its mother?

I read his whole series. Trapped was the book that started my desire to make my first survival kit. It was contained in a surplus map case and I thought I could survive anything with it.

To be young and naiive again!

I remember thinking that If I had a good sheath knife..then anything was possible. I wondered if his knife REALLY could carve through a ships deck! Great story when I was young...I bet it is still a good yarn.
Some other stories that I liked as a boy (and I cant remember the name to) are as follows..(some might be short stories) :
1. Man is in jungle..looking at spiders..falls into a pit..pit fills with spiders..he digs his way out. Very creepy survival story.
2. "Where the Red Fern grows" ..classic
3. The shiprecked listed above
4. "To start a fire" ? I believe thats the title.
5. Louie Lamour's "Sacketts" books..."Over the far Blue Mountains"..just great stuff about frontier living.
6...to be continued.
